Wheatsville Co-op has been serving the Austin community for 40 years and there’s a lot we can learn from their way of doing business. With a purpose statement that doesn’t once mention food, but instead reads, “to create a self-reliant, self-empowering community of people that will grow and promote a transformation of society toward cooperation, justice, and non-exploitation,” you can tell this isn’t your typical grocery store. If you suffer from food allergies or autoimmune disease, you know that dining out can be restrictive. As a foodie who later developed celiac disease, the number of restaurants in Austin where I’m able to dine safely can be counted on both hands. I wrote about these safety bunkers in my article, “Top 10 Austin Restaurants When It MUST Be Gluten-free.” Thanks to Picnik, that number has grown to 11. [Read more…]

Matt's El Rancho Iconic Tex Mex Restaurant

Matt’s El Rancho is one of Austin’s most beloved Tex-Mex restaurants

Guest article by Laurie Engle

Matt Martinez was a boxer and winner of the Cross Country Olympics in Kodiak, Alaska in 1952 before he opened his now iconic restaurant. Once open, Martinez took special care of his customers while his wife, Janie, worked in the kitchen cooking everything from scratch. Here are some other things you may not know about Matt’s El Rancho in Austin.

Truck, trailer or Airstream, food on wheels plays a huge role in Austin’s culture. Sometimes it can be difficult to explore the food truck scene, since many of these mini eateries don’t have consistent hours of operation. But the good thing about food trucks is they are everywhere!

One of my favorite streets to explore is South 1st Street. There are two major food trailer parks on the strip, as well as several other notable trucks between the two. So get your Thanksgiving pants out of storage and eat your way through these food trucks on South 1st Street. [Read more…]

Cornucopia Rethinks Popcorn With Bizarre and Delicious Flavors

Posted on September 6, 2016 by Brittany Highland

Cornucopia Gourmet Popcorn Austin

You can sample more than 30 flavors of gourmet popcorn at Cornucopia’s two locations in Austin

Voted “Best Sampling Room” in Austin in 2015 by the Austin Chronicle, Cornucopia is a place where you can enjoy yourself while discovering sweet and savory treats to pass onto others. As the name suggests, this local business creates a wide range of popcorn flavors, with a special emphasis on seasonal varieties.

Owner and “Poperator” Nadia Elhaj founded Cornucopia in 2008, envisioning popcorn as “a canvas for flavor and fun.” She has always loved the idea of taking something that’s been around for generations, popcorn, and giving it a fresh twist. [Read more…]

My Sweet Austin Bakes Tasty Treats in West Campus

Bakery Selection at My Sweet Austin

Few people consider cookies for breakfast. But on a cloudy Saturday morning in Austin’s West Campus neighborhood, I was doing just that. Sampling tarts, cupcakes and macaroons while moving trucks brought dozens of UT students back to school in the area around me. I felt like a kid sneaking treats in Willy Wonka’s factory. It felt good to be so bad.

And this local bakery more than delivered. Nestled on a quiet street in a lively part of town, My Sweet Austin has made a name for itself in the ATX baked goods scene. While still owning a young business, head chef Sara Mayes has concocted a menu full of fresh, lively flavors that leap off the baking sheet and into your mouth. [Read more…]

10 Austin Breakfast Sandwiches to Choose From This Week

Posted on August 22, 2016 by Sommer Brugal

Cenote Austin Breakfast Sandwiches

Cenote’s breakfast sandwiches overflow with local ingredients and pasture-raised eggs

Before we begin, and in an effort to avoid any hurt feelings, I should make one thing clear: I love breakfast tacos. The combination of scrambled eggs, black beans, pico de gallo, and avocados on a freshly-made corn tortilla is one of the most satisfying meals I could ever order. It’s a dish that hasn’t let me down yet.

But when I relocated to Austin from the East Coast, my taste buds longed for something familiar to home: I was craving a breakfast sandwich. When my first Sunday morning in town rolled around, I set out to find the best breakfast sandwich Austin had to offer.

Sure enough, I found it. Actually, I found ten.

Here’s a list of my favorite Austin breakfast sandwiches that are sure to please East Coast natives and Austinites alike. [Read more…]

Prohibition Creamery East Austin

Austin is revered as one of the booziest American cities, hosting hundreds of bars to satisfy parched residents and tourists on steamy evenings during the summer months. In terms of other refreshing treats, Austin is also well-known for ice cream, snow cones, gelato and sorbet through establishments like Lick Honest Ice Creams and Dolce Neve.

Laura Aidan decided to combine both delights into an ice cream parlor and cocktail bar establishment called Prohibition Creamery. Opening on East 7th Street in mid-July 2016, Prohibition Creamery has already gathered an influx of fans due to its handcrafted, all-natural ingredients blended smoothly with wine and liquors such as bourbon and tequila. Posted on August 16, 2016 by Brittany Highland

If I was on Family Feud answering the question, “What is your favorite food during summertime?” I might end up with my own viral GIF if I shouted, “soup.” It’s understandable–summer and hot liquid aren’t much of a match.

But this summer, I encourage you to look past the name of Austin-based The Soup Peddler, which has a lot to offer even at this time of year. [Read more…]
