Fluff Meringues & More (PERMANENTLY CLOSED)

Back in 2019, I saw Fluff Meringues & More popping up everywhere. Y’all, I’m sad to share that I’d never had a meringue before! But Fluff opened my eyes up to the world of these delicious sweets. Although I highly recommend trying out the meringues, they also offer desserts like macarons, scones, jam, and an afternoon tea tower (of which I need to try).

Best Cupcakes in Austin
Which cupcake in Austin will become your new favorite?

As soon as I pitched this article, I realized I’d bitten off more than I could chew (cheesy pun intended). I liken cupcakes to the Hemsworth brothers: it’s impossible to pick a favorite. Cafe Nena’i is tucked away on the east side of Austin. Elena Sanguinetti and Gladys Benitez, mother-daughter duo and owners of the bakery, chose the location because it was raw and largely untapped at the time they opened in 2017.

Sanguinetti, the mom, was raised on a farm in Paraguay. Daughter Benitez grew up in Miami. When they arrived in Austin, they wanted to share the food of their heritage and melting-pot experience in Miami.

Prepare to add something a bit more delicate to that pantheon of delectable Austin treats. By perfecting the under-appreciated and oft maligned meringue, the team at Fluff Meringues & More has filled a niche local foodies didn’t know they needed. Whenever I do a food tasting, it’s usually in a public setting. A small shop on 25th Street, a bustling dining room, or even in a commissary kitchen, surrounded by clouds of flour smoke and blazing ovens. Imagine my surprise when I found myself at the baker’s dining room table, tasting delectable treats for the purposes of this review.

A storefront isn’t necessary to create baked good magic. With a handful of pop-up events on its side and a menu of sensational sweet treats to share, Basilflower Patisserie creates unique takes on classic dishes and across-the-pond culinary delights.

Austin Ice Cream Festival

Sample from local businesses like Tèo Gelato at Austin Ice Cream Festival

“Here comes the heat. How will I cope?” In Austin, these are daily thoughts during the onset of summertime. In my case, the question is often followed by: “I need a sweet scoop of chocolate chip ice cream.” And/or: “Okay, Google, where’s the nearest snow cone?” And/or: “Just put me in an ice bath already.”

Well, thank ye sweet festival heaven for a most elegant solution: Austin Ice Cream Festival. This coming June 23, 2018, food trucks, ice cream trucks, musicians, dogs, and humans big and small will converge for the twelfth year of one of The Today Show’s “Top Festivals in the Country.” [Read more…]

HopDoddy New Menu Items for 2018

Hopdoddy burgers and cocktails (Credit: Hopdoddy)

Carnivores, pescatarians, and vegetarians have all given their stamp of approval to Hopdoddy. Not only does this Austin staple serve a killer burger, but the milkshakes and cocktails are outstanding, as well. And this just in: Hopdoddy is cooking up new plates for 2018. The just-released menu features several new shakes and a “shareables” section with diverse fry flavors.

I had a chance to try the new items out (and loved everything). I would say, “read on to learn more,” but I’m mostly going to let the photos do the talking here.
