Guide to Manor Road’s Best Bars and Restaurants

Guide to Manor Road's Best Bars and Restaurants

School House Pub

It’s a shame that more people aren’t talking about Manor Road. Located in northeast Austin, across I-35 from The University of Texas, these few blocks are packed with shops, bars, bakeries, and restaurants.

Actually, there are over a dozen spots to grab a cold local beer or unique cocktail. Some are classic Austin dive bars, while others are funky joints where you can bring the whole crew. High-end dining options are also available for extraordinary happy hours.

Starting at the 1800 block and heading east, the bars and restaurants below come one after another on Manor Road. It really is a perfect spot for a bar crawl or night out, and it’s easy to tailor your adventure to what you want to eat, drink, or do! [Read more…]

Mattie’s Serves Local Fare With Global Flair Inside Iconic South Austin Home

Posted on May 2, 2017 by Jaclyn Hubersberger

Mattie's Austin Main Dining Room

Mattie’s Southern charm is evident before you even walk through its doors. Upon entering the gates surrounding the Green Pastures estate, located off South First Street, I was immediately taken aback by the impressive 120-year-old Victorian home with wrap-around veranda and giant Live Oak trees, under which peacocks freely roam. Yes, you read that right: peacocks.

As I walked through the front doors into a foyer with a dramatic staircase opening up to the second floor, warmly-lit gathering spaces on either side of me, it felt more like I had arrived for dinner at a celebrity’s home than a public restaurant. The space is undeniably cozy and dripping with Southern hospitality. [Read more…]

Austin’s food and beverage scene is a hotbed for exciting, new concepts, and the many restaurant openings each season prove it. It’s no surprise that pop-up dinner concepts have been making their way onto the scene. These three Austin supper clubs, a mixture of newcomers and proven concepts, are currently the talk of the town. [Read more…]

Finally, an Austin Taco Joint That Lets You Create Your Own Menu Item

Posted on April 19, 2017 by Yulia Dyukova

Tyson's Tacos Hyde Park Austin

I’m at the point in life when I become slightly ashamed to admit out loud the number of tacos I consume weekly. If I share one more picture of tacos al pastor on my Instagram, I’m afraid people won’t understand.

Having said that, I’m not about to slow down. Especially since I’ve discovered that Tyson’s Tacos, a small neighborhood joint on Airport Boulevard, offers tacos created by its customers. I even have a shot at getting my own taco creation on the menu if I visit often enough. [Read more…]

Austin ISD Reinvents Urban School Meals With Health-based Food Trucks

Nacho Average Food Truck School Meals in Austin

Austin ISD’s second Nacho Average Food Truck (Credit: Life Time Foundation)

We now know that we are what we eat, literally. The nutrients in our food provide the foundation for the structure, function, and integrity of every cell in our body.

Today’s students within Austin Independent School District (AISD) are more sweet potato quesadilla with carrot and tomato escabeche than they are frozen chicken nuggets and tater tots of my school lunch past. Think more farmers’ market and less corner bodega, with a staff that includes a buyer, dietitian, and professional chef. [Read more…]

From Hot Rods to BBQ: The Story Behind Slow Pokes Brisket Shack

Posted on April 10, 2017 by Yulia Dyukova

Slow Pokes Brisket Shack

I don’t often find myself in Manchaca. But when I venture that far south, I always come across something awesome. A few weeks ago, on the way home from Blue Starlite Mini Urban Drive-in, I was looking through the car window when something strange caught my eye. “Oh! Wait! Stop! Turn back! What was that? Okay…next time.” I thought I saw a trailer with a bunch of bicycles on the roof. And a couple of vintage cars in the parking lot. And there was a sign for BBQ. I came back a week later to check out this strange place, which turned out to be Slow Pokes Brisket Shack. [Read more…]

Delicious Meets Healthy With Italian Food at L’oca D’oro

L'oca D'oro Italian Food Austin

Wolfgang Puck once said, “Italian food is all about ingredients and it’s not fussy and it’s not fancy.” It seems to me Chef Fiore Tedesco of contemporary Italian restaurant L’oca D’oro would agree with this statement. Moreover, he brings it to life.

If you aren’t sure how to pronounce the name L’oca D’oro, don’t stress out. You’re not the only one! Simply leave out the apostrophes and say “loca doro,” which means, “golden goose” in Italian. Without knowledge of the language, all Italian words sound like music to me. But L’oca D’oro actually has a sweet story behind it. The restaurant was named after Tedesco’s daughter, Lucinda. “I call her Lucy, Lucy Goose. She was born with blonde hair and I called her that since she was a baby.” [Read more…]

Lima Criolla Austin

Austinites can access authentic Peruvian cuisine at Lima Criolla

Austin is known for Tex-Mex. Much less noticeably, there has been a recent surge in other Latin American cuisine. It’s about time we start branching out to try these restaurants inspired by Central and South America.

Lima Criolla is one such restaurant. Small and tucked away in North Austin, it’s owned by a family that moved here from Peru. They’re dedicated to introducing Austinites to the authentic food of their home country. [Read more…]

How Austin’s Tiny Pies Ended Up on Tables Across the U.S.

Posted on February 16, 2017 by Yulia Dyukova

tiny pies austinWith over 40,000 followers on Instagram alone, Tiny Pies proves their taste is big, though their pies may be little. This is the story of how a small business from Austin took the nation by storm.

Tiny Pies Idea Is Born

Tiny Pies is a creative endeavor started by the mother-daughter duo of Kit Seay and Amanda Bates back in 2011. The idea of making hand-held pies came from Bates’ son. He loved taking a slice of pie to school, but it always got too messy. “One day he tossed out an idea: ‘Why don’t you come up with something I can eat with my hand?’ We instantly knew it was a really good idea,” Bates explained.

The idea turned into days spent in the kitchen playing around with recipes and testing flavors. Baking together wasn’t new for the pair. Bates baked with her mom for as long as she can remember. And Seay, in turn, used to bake with her own mom. [Read more…]

Editor’s Note: As of June 8, 2017, Pitchfork Pretty is open for business. The owner also purchased an abandoned lot near the restaurant and has started a garden, from which the restaurant will source produce.

Over the past five years, the East Austin neighborhood of East Cesar Chavez has been developing at a rapid pace that shows no signs of slowing. Following the recent openings of highly anticipated restaurants such as Grizzelda’s, Tillery Kitchen and Bar, and Kemuri Tatsu-ya comes Pitchfork Pretty, scheduled to open in [Read more…]
