4 Favorite Restaurants for Cuban Cuisine in Austin

October 24, 2016 by Ashley Alkek Leave a Comment

Cuban Sandwich Cafe Sign Austin

We live in an exciting time. For one thing, Austinites can now jump on a flight to Havana, Cuba any time of the year. What better way to prepare your taste buds than to try authentic dishes from the best Cuban restaurants here in Austin?

For a moment, imagine yourself on this beautiful island, located between the Caribbean Sea, Mexican Gulf and Atlantic Ocean. 1950’s-era cars are rolling past the rows of pastel-colored houses and salsa music can be heard from every corner. No, I haven’t been, but this is what my imagination creates when I think of the essence of Cuba. Until that adventure happens, we’re all lucky enough to have “day trip” options when it comes to Cuban cuisine in Austin! [Read more…]

5 Places to Get Your Kolache Fix in Austin

October 7, 2016 by Susan Meyer 3 Comments

Kolaches in Austin

Austin is an amazing breakfast taco town. And for those with a sweet tooth, there’s no shortage of memorable donuts. But one breakfast choice that deserves more love is the incomparable kolache.

For those who have yet to experience these little pillows of perfection, kolaches (pronounced kuh-LAH-chee) are Czech and Slovak pastries that (thankfully) made their way to Texas and parts of the Midwest. Traditionally, a kolache is a ring of slightly sweet dough surrounding a dollop of fruit filling. In Texas, we’re lucky to have related versions with sausage, cheese, jalapeño and other savory fillings. Technically called a klobasnek, but often referred to as kolaches, these tasty treats look like pig in blankets on steroids.

Many will tell you the best kolaches are found in West, Texas a little over 100 miles north of Austin. However, before you make the pilgrimage, you should try all the wonderful kolache places right here in the ATX. They’re sometimes sold at donut shops and sometimes at dedicated shops. But where there’s a will to locate a tasty, warm kolache, there’s always a way. To get you started, here are just a few of my favorite kolache places in Austin. [Read more…]

ACL Eats at Austin City Limits Music Festival

Welcome to ACL Eats (Credit: Lars Plougmann via Flickr CC)

When I covered SXSW last year, I felt super prepared. Comfortable shoes, sunscreen, plenty of water. Ear protection for when I found myself inches from a subwoofer in a tiny venue. Everything I needed to survive the five-day event. There was one exception: I kept forgetting to eat.

By the time my stomach started rumbling, restaurants were packed to the gills. Food truck lines stretched 30 minutes long. Finding sustenance was an utter disaster.

Austin City Limits Music Festival 2016 wants to solve this issue with ACL Eats, a dedicated home for over 30 of Austin’s finest food trucks and eateries. From burgers to Pan-Asian, burritos to popsicles, there’s a flavor for everybody at ACL Fest. Below are some of the foods I’m looking forward to most. [Read more…]

This Austin-based restaurant has a mission to cultivate a relaxing, memorable brunch atmosphere every weekend in North Austin, and at their second location on South Lamar. Fortunately, the importance of delicious comfort food isn’t forgotten along the way. [Read more…]

Wheatsville Co-op has been serving the Austin community for 40 years and there’s a lot we can learn from their way of doing business. With a purpose statement that doesn’t once mention food, but instead reads, “to create a self-reliant, self-empowering community of people that will grow and promote a transformation of society toward cooperation, justice, and non-exploitation,” you can tell this isn’t your typical grocery store. If you suffer from food allergies or autoimmune disease, you know that dining out can be restrictive. As a foodie who later developed celiac disease, the number of restaurants in Austin where I’m able to dine safely can be counted on both hands. I wrote about these safety bunkers in my article, “Top 10 Austin Restaurants When It MUST Be Gluten-free.” Thanks to Picnik, that number has grown to 11. [Read more…]
