Plan a Full Day at Treaty Oak Ranch With Addition of Ghost Hill Restaurant

Posted on October 19, 2017 by Vi Chetan

Tasting the Experimental Collection Treaty Oak

Tasting the Experimental Collection at Treaty Oak

Editor’s Note: As of October 2018, Ghost Hill has closed, but Treaty Oak has opened a new restaurant concept named Alice’s Restaurant.

Treaty Oak Ranch opened in 2015 with a focus on creating the best locally-distilled whiskey our area had ever experienced. The Dripping Springs establishment spans 27 acres and takes pride in creating small batch, craft spirits from the best ingredients. As a happy side effect, the distillery brews beer with malts and ingredients from whiskey-making. The Fitzhugh Ale gets its name from Treaty Oak’s location on Fitzhugh Road, and serves as the perfect mid-afternoon glassful of fresh.

As if you needed another reason to visit, Treaty Oak has a new eatery called Ghost Hill Restaurant. It serves up snacks, BBQ, and a full selection of the distillery’s spirits and beers. With a focus on seasonal and locally-sourced ingredients, the 3,500-square-foot space boasts a minimal interior full of warm woods and a fully-stocked bar. The Texas-inspired food lives in the casual, friendly home it deserves. [Read more…]

Cafe Creme Pairs Crepes and Coffee in South Austin

Posted on October 12, 2017 by Amanda Sayers

Crepe and Coffee at Cafe Creme

Crepe and coffee at Cafe Creme on Oltorf

The first time I ate a crepe, it was love at first bite. Add to that a cup of delicious coffee, and I’m completely smitten. So when I tried Cafe Creme, I knew I had found something special in the Austin community.

Cafe Creme has put a lot of love into their family-run bakery over the last four years. This is evident in their delicious food offerings, but also in the community they’ve created. The atmosphere is lively, yet relaxed. People can go to Cafe Creme to socialize, eat tasty food, or even work. [Read more…]

Kebabalicious: Old-school Austin Food Trailer and East Side Eatery

Posted on October 5, 2017 by Jonas White

Kebabalicious Austin

Kebabalicious brick and mortar in east Austin

I’ll admit it: Kebabalicious is my most-frequented eatery in all of Austin. Yes, I love Austin staples like tacos, Tex-Mex, and BBQ. But the heart (stomach) wants what the heart (stomach) wants. Oh, Kebabalicious, you Turkish-inspired, east side restaurant with your charming décor, your fresh, flavorful food, your friendly employees. I just can’t quit you.

I recently met with co-founders Chris Childre and Kristian Ulloa to confess my love for their culinary creations and hear the full story of how Kebabalicious came to be. [Read more…]

Old Thousand Releases Dope Chinese Menu for Lunch

Posted on October 3, 2017 by Vi Chetan

Dope Lunch spread at Old Thousand

Dope lunch spread at Old Thousand

It’s been almost a year since Old Thousand opened its doors on 1000 E. 11th St. The eatery has delivered on its promise of eclectic, modern interpretations of Chinese food, with innovative dishes that are an adventure for the palate. Its tagline is simple: Dope Chinese. Not “authentic,” not “traditional,” but “dope” Chinese food.

And the food is dope, indeed. No Panda Express orange chicken here. Each dish carries Old Thousand’s creative touch. The food also hints at the restaurant’s Texas origin by including brisket and other smoked meats.

A weekend brunch service followed the runaway success of dinner. And now, Old Thousand has expanded again by introducing lunch service. [Read more…]

Warpath Pints and Pizza Round Rock TX

You can get your own slice of the pie at Warpath Pints and Pizza

This past May, Warpath Pints and Pizza opened its doors to the residents of Round Rock, putting specialty pizza on the map in the area. Brothers and New Mexico natives, Joel and Jason Chenoweth, were involved in the music and food truck scenes in Austin for years, before seizing the opportunity to create a gourmet pizza joint just north of Austin. Sweet, spicy, and aromatic–only a few words that come to mind when I think about dining at Sway.
Before I left the restaurant for the first time, I was already picking out what I wanted to try
next. It was that good.

Starting with Thai favorites, the chefs at Sway enhance the menu by incorporating locally-sourced ingredients and Western techniques into their cooking. Sway stands out to those who favor tradition, as well as those who crave something unique. Since opening its doors in 2012, Sway’s ingenuity has made the restaurant a staple in the Bouldin Creek neighborhood. [Read more…]

Batch Brings Kolaches and Over 400 Beers to Manor Road

Posted on September 25, 2017 by Vi Chetan

Fresh baked kolaches at Batch in Austin

Fresh-baked kolaches at Batch on Manor Road

Batch Craft Beer & Kolaches opened its doors in early August 2017, filling the Manor neighborhood with the delicious smell of fresh-baked kolaches. Many Austinites take kolaches as seriously as breakfast tacos. The soft, puffy, sweet dough comes stuffed with a variety of fillings, ranging from fruit to meat. Though many argue the savory-filled ones should be called “klobasniky” (Czech for “little sausages”), it’s a mere technicality that falls away at the first bite. [Read more…]

What endears Austin to its people? I suggest it’s outdoor spaces and creativity, tied together with a steadfast devotion to community. The Yard, south Austin’s revitalized community of makers, embodies these Austin virtues.

This is the first installment in a series of articles about The Yard, a seductively made-over industrial district. Spend an entertaining day-into-evening at The Yard, discovering these stellar spots. [Read more…]

Burnet Road Eats Puts Spotlight on North Austin Foodie District

Posted on September 21, 2017 by Vi Chetan

Inside The Peached Tortilla

Inside The Peached Tortilla on Burnet

Burnet Road Eats is a dinner series that highlights local dining spots on Burnet Road. On the first Wednesday of the month, each participating restaurant offers a food and drink combination for $10. Burnet Road has been catching up with SoCo and Lamar. The north Austin neighborhood is giving its southern counterparts a run for their money when it comes to dining and entertainment.

Daniela Marcone, owner of Andiamo, is the creator of the Burnet Road Eats series. With 13 years of operating Andiamo in north Austin, the evolution of the dining culture is apparent to Marcone. By creating the event series, she hopes to shine a light on quality local restaurants like The Peached Tortilla and Bufalina Due, as well as Andiamo.

Back in Europe, Marcone would go on tapas tasting adventures with friends. By keeping portions small, she hopes Burnet Road Eats participants can do the same. The pairings offered by participating restaurants are true to each location’s style and cuisine.

Russian House Through the Eyes of a Russian Transplant in Austin

Posted on September 19, 2017 by Yulia Dyukova

Russian House Austin Bear

I distinctly remember the first time I stumbled across Russian House. Still new to Austin, I was walking around downtown when I spotted the familiar khokhloma pattern on the side of a building. Above the name Russian House on the outside side, smaller letters read, “Na Zdorovye.” “Noooo,” I thought to myself, “No, no, no, no, noooo…Et tu, Brute?”

I was surprised to find a Russian restaurant in downtown Austin, but even more surprised to find a Russian restaurant using the term Na Zdorovye. You see, “na zdorovye” is what foreigners believe Russians say as “cheers.” But no native Russian has ever said that while drinking.

The misconception probably finds its roots in the fact that “na zdorovye” is indeed used in some eastern European countries. But if you want to drink like a real Russian, learning one phrase and saying it over and over is not enough, my friends. Here’s what you need to do. [Read more…]
