Gorgeous Millie Touch-a-Truck Benefiting Austin Children’s Shelter

October 31, 2012 by Guest Blogger 7 Comments

Kids Enjoy Music at Touch A Truck

Kids enjoy music at Touch-a-Truck

This guest blog post is by Kristin Shaw.

Last year, pre-preschool Gorgeous Millie brought the first Touch-a-Truck to the Austin area to benefit the Austin Children’s Shelter, with the intent to make it an annual event.  They had no idea what to expect in terms of a crowd, and hoped for 200-300 people to start.  Imagine their surprise when visitors started pouring in steadily, and an estimated 1,000+ visitors were tallied at the end of the day. This year, the event will take place on Saturday, November 3rd at Valley View Elementary School.

Community-minded co-founders JC Conklin and Laura Jacks wanted to host an event that would benefit a children’s organization and provide a fun day for children in the Austin’s area, and Touch-a-Truck was born.   This year, they’ve moved the event from Bridgepoint Elementary School to Valley View Elementary School.  [Read more…]

I’m No Longer a Facial Virgin Because of Vital Skin Care

October 17, 2012 by Brittany Highland 4 Comments

Grapevine Salons in Austin, TexasI had my first pedicure at my bridal shower and my first manicure a few weeks ago. Odd, maybe. Pampering simply wasn’t a part of my culture growing up.

Nonetheless, when I was offered the chance to have an Austin facial as my first facial ever, there were no complaints from me. Megan Deterling of Vital Skin Care has been a much appreciated sponsor of The Austinot in the past, and she kindly invited me out for a facial demonstration.

Grapevine Salons is home to Vital Skin CareVital Skin Care is located in Grapevine Salons’ northern location, just off of W. Anderson at Mopac. Grapevine Salons is an elegant space with multiple suites that are rented out. The vast majority of suites at this location are occupied by hair stylists. There are also a small handful of manicurists (or is it nail technicians? I never know what to call them). Vital Skin Care is in the minority, with only one other suite offering facials on site. Go Behind the Screams with SeaWorld San Antonio’s Face Your Fears Tour

October 15, 2012 by Eric Highland Leave a Comment

Jack's Frightmare Forest at SeaWorld San AntonioA country preacher stands at a raised podium just outside the entrance of Jack’s Frightmare Forest at SeaWorld San Antonio. He delivers a brief message in a somber tone about the importance of facing your fears. He then ushers you into one of the most spooky haunted walks around.

At the Austinot, we often venture within a day’s drive of Austin if we think something’s really special and worth doing.

This is definitely one of those things. [Read more…]
