The first time I went to Texas Hill Country as a wine destination was about 15 years ago. It was akin to visiting a small farm, and I left without bothering to dream of what it could become.

If this story were made into a romantic comedy, a montage would now begin of Texas wine makers learning the Texas grapes, testing and finding the grape varietals that were going to work best in Texas, and building beautiful tasting rooms and properties. People from all over the world would hear of the Texas Wine Country region, as the number of wineries grew to more than 260. I would return a decade later, and fall in love.

With so much to do in Texas Hill Country, it can be a difficult deciding on your next day trip adventure. One place to consider is Fredericksburg, a charming town with a proud German heritage, located less than two hours west of Austin.

No matter what you end up doing there, you’ll fall in love with Fredericksburg! Here are a few of my personal recommendations for your next visit.

The Alamo Springs Cafe

For the longest time, Alamo Springs Cafe didn’t have a website. AlamoSpringsCafe.com redirected to a Facebook page. They are out in the middle of nowhere. And none of this bothers them in the least.

When your burgers are this good, you don’t need to worry about silly little details like location and a functional website. I mean, who needs all that to be successful, right?
