After 8 years of covering Austin, the Austinist has decided to close its virtual doors.
At least that’s what they announced in their latest blog post entitled “Good-Bye and Thank You” by Jake Dobkin and Jen Chung, the folks behind Gothamist, LLC.

Editor’s Note: As of May 2018, The Goodnight on West Anderson Lane has closed. A new location is planned for West Sixth Street.
The Goodnight in Austin sits an arrow’s flight away from Alamo Drafthouse Village on West Anderson. It’s an adults-only playground (18+ until 9 PM, 21+ after 9 PM) with an upscale menu, massive bar, bowling, ping pong, karaoke, shuffleboard and more.
Just shy of a year ago, our contributing blogger, Laura Darby, made a visit to The Goodnight in Austin. She was searching for a temporary replacement for The Highball, which was undergoing a long-term renovation project. Laura’s article, combined with the mixed comments left by readers, peaked my interest enough to want to check out The Goodnight for myself. [Read more…]
It was 1979 and we were visiting my mother’s friend. As a nine year old, I found their conversation lacking and decided to go exploring through the house. Okay, so not only was I bored, but I was also a bit of a snoop.
I crept upstairs and found a fold-away ladder that led to the attic. We all know how scary attics can be, but undaunted I reached for the first rung. I almost turned around when I got to the top of the ladder, but I found a flashlight there.
A quick scan with the dim and yellowed light beckoned me to adventure into the cobweb filled triangular space at the top of the home.
A dusty cardboard box literally filled to the brim with comic books sat in a corner of the room. I sat there until the light gave out, reading story after story of superheroes and villains, completely entranced by the art and the fantastic stories.
That was my first experience with comics. I hadn’t thought about that childhood memory in a long time. Fast forward 34 years, I’m a blogger living in Austin and I get invited to check out [Read more…]
If you’ve been looking for the best burgers in Austin, you’ve come to the right place. This post is part of a series on the Austinot.
Remember, I’m looking at not only the burgers, but the experience as a whole.
You’ll always get an honest take on the burger joints I visit. I’m not on any burger joint’s payroll.
After you’ve read my review, agree or disagree with a comment. I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Most Austinites love P. Terry’s. It’s a true local staple, with seven [Read more…]
You’ve seen these gadgets all over Austin. They almost look like Dr. Who’s Sonic Screwdriver, only people are puffing on them and releasing a cloud of scented vapor, right? Well they’re called vaporizers (poorly referred to as e-cigarettes). And though they can’t pick locks, perform medical scans or track alien life, they are most certainly all the rage.
Whether you’re just curious about vaping or you’re a seasoned vaper, you’ll be glad to know that Austin is now home to one of the premier vapor shops in the entire country: All About Vapor. [Read more…]
The end of 2008 found John Gambini sitting in a doctor’s office, reading an article in Texas Co-op Power Magazine about the fledgling olive oil industry in Texas. John loved the romance of the Texas Hill Country and had already decided that he wanted to plant firm roots in the area (pun intended).
But more than putting a stake in the ground, John wanted to do some pioneering, accomplishing something that would stand out from other Hill Country offerings. After reading the article, he realized that he could be one of the early pioneers in the olive oil industry in Texas.
So John set out with a dream: to create a destination-class olive oil business here in Texas.
And that’s exactly what he did. [Read more…]

In the Texas Hill Country, we’re spoiled beyond measure. Few places on earth compare to the natural beauty in our area.
Most drive through Central Texas and get the perspective from the ground. But everyone does that, right?
Why not see the majesty of the Hill Country in a way that you’ll never forget? It’s time to zip line in Wimberley, Texas!
I’ve had a pretty adventurous life, but soaring over the Texas Hill Country on a zip line was one of the most [Read more…]
Some of the best memories I’ve made in my lifetime have been on the water. Though I’ve spent many years out on the open ocean, I’ve arguably enjoyed my time on lakes and rivers just as much, if not more.
Thinking back on my childhood, there are few memories that compare with catching my first fish with my dad on a lake in the Pacific Northwest, or the seemingly endless summers spent on an inflatable raft with friends, pretending we were explorers. [Read more…]
