If you’re like me, you love homemade arts and crafts that are unlike anything you’ve ever seen.

Maybe you love the prospect of gifting a loved one with a one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry. Maybe the home decor item that made you feel love at first sight is the perfect expression of who you are and what makes your home feel like home. [Read more…]

$50 Date Night in Austin: Blanton Art Museum and Dog and Duck Pub

Posted on July 17, 2012 by MatthewStewart

Antique Comic Book Cover First Kiss

What’s creepier: The phrase, “I was desperate for ‘A Grown-Ups Love’ or that creeper peeper with the “S” sweater is named Lonny?

Editor’s Note: Dog and Duck Pub is closed as of November 2017.

I don’t know how to describe marriage. Sure, there are descriptors you can use to paint the picture of a relationship: happy, sad, angry, contentious; whatever. But the abundance of healthy relationships, I think — ones that work anyway — are centered in a type of commonality that isn’t really ripe for description.

When I belch and watch football and grunt like a neanderthal or if I’m dragged to the profoundly miserable Sex and the City 2  or made to endure indubitably girly “craft nights” — you know, these things that would otherwise find people incompatible — there’s that commonality with each other that brings us together. Little boy bicycling in AustinHow would you like to save 10% off a meal, just for riding your bike to a local Austin restaurant? I’m happy to report that Austin’s first annual Bike-to-Eat Week lets you do just that!

Through this Thursday, ride your bike to any of 25 participating locations to receive a discount on food and alcohol. To get your discount, you may be required to show that you arrived by bike.

North Austin Trailer Yard Opens at W. Anderson & Lamar

Posted on May 17, 2012 by Brittany Highland

Grand opening of North Austin Trailer YardEDITOR’S NOTE: NATY officially closed, with the last truck leaving July 8, 2013. We were sad to see it go and feel that North Austin really needs a permanent home for the food truck community.

Last Saturday, the North Austin Trailer Yard (NATY) opened up at W. Anderson and Lamar Blvd. – in the Planet Fitness parking lot.

Austinites swarmed to the city’s newest food truck conglomeration to exercise their taste buds and see the haps.

The food trailers currently located at NATY are:

Concert at the Capitol – Your Mother’s Day Event In Austin

Posted on May 10, 2012 by Dustin Vegas

Moms are great. Stop for a second and think about how much yours has sacrificed to raise you. Now remember: this Sunday is Mother’s Day.

Are you looking for worthwhile Mother’s Day events in Austin? More specifically, are you doing it on the cheap? Good news — The Austin Symphonic Band is playing a free live show on the Capitol steps this Sunday. This is a chance for you to give your mother the time she deserves while saving a few bucks!

The Austin Symphonic Band is the official band of the City of Austin. It came around in the early 1980s as a way for local Austinites to come together and play music for themselves and the public. The band has been extremely popular over the past thirty years, and now it draws large crowds for every show.

You can catch the Austin Symphonic Band playing in many different places, depending on the time of year, because they love to play free open air shows for the public whenever possible. They are regulars at [Read more…]

Big Girls Don’t Cry: Texas Rollergirls This Saturday at ACC

Posted on April 19, 2012 by Brittany Highland

Texas Rollergirls at the Austin Convention CenterI grew up on the straight-laced side of Texas, where getting my ears pierced for a second time was stretching the boundaries just a bit. So should it be all that surprising that when I first heard about Rollergirls, they scared me? I was living up in Seattle at the time, and all the tattoos and brawniness, fishnet and shoving was intimidating.

Little did I know that April 21, 2012 would have me in the middle of the Austin Convention Center with the Honky Tonk Heartbreakers, Hotrod Honeys, Hell Marys and the Hustlers…and nothing but a camera to block any incoming blows.

You heard me. The Texas Rollergirls are back this Saturday at the Austin Convention Center and they’re taking no [Read more…]
