Unconventional Christmas Decorations- a 37th Street Tradition

On December 13, 37th Street held its annual and most anticipated event, the opening of the street lights. 37th Street is known for quirky, colorful decorations, with no common pattern to them. The lights are not only fun to see, but most have a typical Austin theme to them. The street will be open to visitors until New Year’s Day when the lights will be taken down.

This age-old tradition started between the late 1980s and the early 90s, by a homeowner who decided to take a less traditional approach to Christmas decorating. More and more houses caught on to the idea, and it became a tradition. Unfortunately, the displays died down in the mid-2000s when most of the original homeowners moved away. The street was silent for a few years until 2015 when new residents got the lights up again. Since then, people have continued to come from all over Austin to view the quirky displays.

The colorful lights were turned on, on  December 13, 2024, and will be on from sunset to 10 pm every night until January 1, 2025. The street gets a lot of visitors and is generally pretty busy, so keep that in mind when visiting. Please also remember to be respectful to the homeowners, as they have spent a lot of time and effort to make 37th Street a beautiful attraction. “It took me probably six hours, maybe eight hours,” One homeowner said. “But my house was pretty lazy compared to others.” Decorating the street has become so much of a tradition, that there is even a storage shed with lights for the residents to use for their houses!

37th Street has many attractions, including a stuffed animal petting zoo. The zoo features adorable stuffed animals that can be “adopted” by people. This is perfect, especially for younger children, but anyone can adopt a stuffed animal! There are also some stands by the side of the street, where vendors sell everything from cookies to glow sticks. Some houses even use their decorations to promote social/peace messages. As the street is located in downtown Austin, there are also nearby shops and restaurants to enjoy.

Going to see the 37th Street lights is a perfect way to spend some extra time with your family and friends. Taking the time to enjoy all the unusual attractions of this vibrant street is an unforgettable experience for anyone. So take the chance to visit this unique neighborhood, because it is the literal definition of Keep Austin Weird!
