Then again, The Austinot is pretty brand-spankin’ new itself.

Let’s face it. Austin packs a bajillion awesome places into a relatively small area, and it’s just impossible to know about them all.

That’s where you can help us out.

By using the Invite form on our site, many local businesses have invited us out and allowed us to discover Austin secrets that we never would’ve known about otherwise. We’ve rounded up a few of them for today’s podcast episode. Have you been to these places?

  1. American Bingo Gringo in Austin

American Bingo – This is more than your grandmother’s game. American Bingo creates a friendly environment with food and giveaways, like iPads and gas cards. Plus, the dollars you put down to play go to charities. Scotish Rite Dyslexia Center, Home Builders Association of Central Texas and many other charities are supported by American Bingo, and by you when you visit. We liked bingo before, but we were surprised by [Read more…]

Calliope Musicals New Album Profits Homeless Through Magic Militia

Skinny's Ballroom in Downtown Austin

Calliope Musicals CD release at Skinny’s Ballroom

What was planned as an 11 o’clock show time stretched to midnight, but that didn’t suck the energy from the crowd.

Skinny’s Ballroom was crammed, as fans of Calliope Musicals gathered to celebrate the release of the Austin band’s first full-length album.

As lead singer Carrie Fussell glided through their set, I sensed a heavy influence from 60s and 70s music and even conjoured up some mental images of flower power. I wasn’t too surprised to find out that the band has compared their sound to The Mamas & the Papas, Paul Simon, Jefferson Airplane, The Rolling Stones and Janis Joplin. Singer and guitarist Matt Roth even bounced up and down a bit like the boys on the Ed Sullivan Show back in the day.  [Read more…]

“It doesn’t matter who you are, what you are, what you want out of life. It’s not about politics. It’s not about religion. It’s about humanity.”

Jeny Crouch didn’t claim Summer 2012 as her time to kick back and relax. Instead, she decided to lead a charge that began in Austin, but has spread literally around the world.

From June 20th to September 21st, Jeny is volunteering at least one hour every week to Moving Difference, a loose movement with a profound purpose. [Read more…]

Coolhaus Food Truck Cools Austinites Down for Texas Summer

July 2, 2012 by Brittany Highland 2 Comments

Coolhaus food truck at E. 6th St. and WallerWhat other Austin food trucks do you know that offer discount passwords like “Vivanta Hotel” or “Sydney Opera House”? At first, the architectural references may seem out of character for a purveyor of ice cream sandwiches. But dig a bit deeper into the story of Coolhaus and it should start to make sense.

Founders Natasha and Freya met through a mutual friend at Cornell University. The two fast friends had something in common that not everyone does: a passion for architecture. Natasha was a student of the art who wanted to make architecture “fun and accessible.” Freya had a background in real estate and construction. Both women saw the principles they cared about being devalued, due to the recession. [Read more…]

Weird Coupons Supports Local Austin Businesses

June 26, 2012 by Brittany Highland 3 Comments

Weird Coupons Deals App in Austin TexasLiving in a city full of innovators and risk-takers is exciting. The vibrant startup scene in Austin is part of what makes our culture unique. I can’t go to a networking event without meeting an individual with bright eyes who wants to share his or her dream with the world.

But the business formation process can be messy. An exciting idea doesn’t automatically lead to a solid company.

Maybe it’s the pragmatist in me, but some startup ideas make me scratch my head a bit. Sometimes I just can’t envision how a certain idea is going to work.

Then sometimes, I can. [Read more…]
