May 29, 2012 by Brittany Highland 5 Comments

Young professionals support Ronald McDonald House AustinEvery non-profit needs a support network. In a recent article, I unearthed the fact that Austin’s Ronald McDonald House Charities relies largely on local donations to keep its doors open and continue to serve ill children and their families.

Since then, I became friends with Friends of the House. Friends of the House is a group of young professionals that organized in Austin five years ago. Their mission is to raise awareness for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Austin (RMHC) and support RMHC with volunteer hours and donations. [Read more…]

Austin Art Exhibit Displays Hope in Homelessness

May 23, 2012 by Brittany Highland 2 Comments

Visitors to Gallery at the J examine Daniel Read's exhibitThe invention of the camera gave us the ability to capture the world around us in fleeting moments of time. Then, few people could afford to own a camera and film was limited. What remains of that era are family portraits, and images of important events and political figures.

Today, cameras are widely accessible and digital features allow us to create and discard photographs with barely a thought. We take pictures of our cocktails at parties, our dogs when they fall asleep on our chest, a dandelion on the side of the road.

From one perspective, these types of photos are excessive or [Read more…]

May 17, 2012 by Brittany Highland 20 Comments

Grand opening of North Austin Trailer YardEDITOR’S NOTE: NATY officially closed, with the last truck leaving July 8, 2013. We were sad to see it go and feel that North Austin really needs a permanent home for the food truck community.

Last Saturday, the North Austin Trailer Yard (NATY) opened up at W. Anderson and Lamar Blvd. – in the Planet Fitness parking lot.

Austinites swarmed to the city’s newest food truck conglomeration to exercise their taste buds and see the haps.

The food trailers currently located at NATY are:

  • Snarky's Moo Baa Oink at NATYJohnny T’s BBQ (Mouthwatering Texas BBQ)
  • Snarky’s Moo Baa Oink (sandwiches)
  • KraK2 (gourmet doughnuts)
  • Genuine Joe (coffee and fresh smoothies)
  • Big Fat Greek Gyros (traditional Greek food)

Ronald McDonald House is a Quiet Hero for Families in Need

May 7, 2012 by Brittany Highland 6 Comments

Ronald McDonald House Charities of AustinIf you have ever had a loved one sick with a serious illness, you know how life is turned upside down. Your ability to work is impeded by worry, and day-to-day necessities like eating and sleeping take the back burner to the nurturing of the one you care about. Having a sick child may be the most devastating scenario of all.

What if there was an organization that cared for families with sick or injured children, and met every one of their needs? What if that organization went the extra mile to provide all kinds of comforts, as a service to suffering families?

A few weeks ago, Austinot Eric and I had the privilege of touring the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of Austin. Although both of us had volunteered at other Ronald McDonald Houses in the past, I had an incomplete picture of how RMHC functions and how much it provides for the community. [Read more…]
