Click Play on the podcast player above to listen to this week’s episode of the Austinot Podcast!

This week’s episode is sponsored by Dominican Joe Coffee Shop. Visit “DoJo” at 515 South Congress, and make sure you listen to our episode to hear everything we love about this special local business. A huge thank you to my favorite coffee shop in Austin for supporting The Austinot.

We have a special mash-up for you today on The Austinot podcast. Sometimes we have so many cool things we want to share, that it’s difficult to connect them under a traditional topic. So we invented a topic: Randomly Awesome Things in Austin You Need to Know About. We think that’s good enough, don’t you?

We’d love to hear your opinion on our awesome Austin list, and hear about your personal recommendations! You should know by now that we listen to you and love to check out places you think we should.

5 Randomly Awesome Things in Austin

La Mexciana Bakery breakfast tacos in Austin

Breakfast tacos at La Mexicana Bakery – yummy!

La Mexicana Bakery – Whether you’re looking for an authentic breakfast taco, your pick of a wide variety of pan dulce (Mexican sweet bread) or the best horchata I’ve ever had, La Mexicana is your place. This 24-hour bakery and restaurant has a full menu for whatever you’re craving. 1924 S. 1st St.

Zookeeper Exotic Pets – We love this locally owned and operated pet store. Beyond supplying everything we need for our bearded dragon, we love to walk around the shop and look at the amazing animals there! A two-toed sloth is a permanent resident, but visit in the morning to see her active. See reptiles, frogs, rabbits and guinea pigs, as well as the occasional hedgehog, prairie dog, miniature pig and other unusual pets. The staff members here are great and they welcome families with children who just want to take a look! 9327 Burnet Rd.

Lucy in Disguise – This SoCo icon has a mind-boggling array of costumes and accessories. Weave through garb for pirates, superheroes, go-go dancers and fairy-tale characters. We all know that accessories make a costume (or any outfit, right ladies?). Lucy in Disguise has accessories in abundance: hats, belts, purses, scarves, weapons, masks, jewelry and shoes! Employees love to help customers put together their perfect costume, and I’ve personally seen them robe an impressive replica of the Tin Man. This is another shop that you’re always welcome to browse in, even if Halloween isn’t for another 8 months. 1506 S. Congress Ave.

The Belmont – Recently reopened, The Belmont club at W. 6th and Lavaca has big plans for the future. The Belmont currently boasts regular live music on their large outdoor stage, a VIP room and patio, a food truck on site and daily happy hour. Unique partnerships with local artists are also in the works, to enhance The Belmont’s already-pleasing decor. We enjoy spending time at The Belmont and look forward to what’s to come. 305 W. 6th St.

Disc Nation – Disc golf has become a lasting part of the Austin landscape, and we know why! Disc golf is fun, and inexpensive to get in at an entry level. There are courses all over Austin and the disc golf community is friendly and helpful. Disc Nation is a disc golf supply store in South Austin that plays a huge role in keeping players stocked up and inspired. We went to them when we were first starting out and they were a huge help. We definitely encourage you to throw down $20 or so to get started with this unique sport. It’s family- and beginner-friendly, and you can drop us a line if you need someone to play with! 1218 W. Slaughter Ln.

@QuasiBrit asks:

So how about it? Will you share an awesome Austin thing that we’ve left out?

      We did mention Mt. Bonnell during our “Top 5 Austin Date Ideas” episode (http://austinot.wpengine.com/austinot-podcast-top-austin-date-ideas) & our “7 Ways to Make the Most of Austin” episode (http://austinot.wpengine.com/7-ways-to-make-the-most-of-austin-austinot-podcast).

      The symphony sounds awesome! We’ve actually been trying to figure out how to celebrate the 4th. Thanks for the tip!
