Duke Ellington Jazzes Up the Stage at Zach Theatre

If you’ve daydreamed of stepping back into the roaring 20’s without the assistance of a time machine, head to Zach Theatre to see their production of Sophisticated Ladies.

Upon taking your seat, you’re greeted by a striking image of a gentleman’s face that consumes the stage. His head is tilted downward, warm expressive eyes gaze upward, with skin smooth as silk and a chin resting on a crisp white bow tie. The rim of his top hat casts a slight shadow, leaving an air of mystery. But there was no doubt who was watching over the crowd: jazz composer Duke Ellington, also known as The Duke for his signature dapper attire.

Duke Ellington’s Sophisticated Ladies offers a night of indulgence sprinkled with glitz and glamour. Scenes unfold on a stage that mimics Harlem’s notorious jazz venue where Mr. Ellington’s fame blossomed, the Cotton Club. [Read more…]

Which bands did you check out last weekend? Maybe you caught a soulful blues set at Saxon Pub. Dug a few cover bands on Dirty 6th. Rocked out to a bluegrass/hardcore mashup at Empire Garage.

Me? I saw a circus funk/rock seven piece with performance artists, a rapper dressed like a cast member from Super Troopers and at least one band member jumping on a trampoline.

Each year, Austinites eagerly anticipate the return of the 101X Summer Cinema Series where they can escape the crazy day to day routine, relax and enjoy a good movie in good company. Last year’s event included films like Jurassic Park, Independence Day, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Goonies and Back to The Future.

You know what’s even crazier about this shot of Big Air? People actually ride down this thing. I had a hard time looking over it.

For four days and three nights, X Games landed on Circuit of The Americas like an adrenaline soaked blanket. Fast action, crazy tricks and unbelievable music filled the early June air with energy and fun.

With over 1,800 in attendance, Alejandro Rose-Garcia was headlining in front of his largest crowd ever. “I’m just gonna take a minute to soak all this in,” Alejandro, better known as Shakey Graves, shared with the at-capacity audience.
