“One ticket left,” hummed the doorman at Stubb’s before Mayeux & Broussard’s album release show. The swampy tonk men who are Tate Mayeux (Vocals/Acoustic Guitar), Brian Broussard (Vocals/Lead Guitar), Taylor Englert (Drums), Misha ben-David (Bass) and Eddie Dickerson (Fiddle) effaced the rigid laws of genre pigeonholing with a riotous performance Saturday night.

Neither dull nor dainty, and nitty-gritty as Mayeux and Broussard’s humble beginnings in a metal band, the release show bargained for a Texan sprawl of spectators, which is exactly what it produced. With bouts of yeehaws and hollers in celebration of new album High Times & Good Rhymes recorded at Cedar Creek Studios with engineer John Ross Silva, the hometown show culminated after several years of grueling work on the road. Music fans who happened to be wandering past Holy Mountain off Red River last weekend may have noticed that it felt more like a packed dance party than a typical Saturday night show. The mesmerizing trio of Justin Dillon, Chuco Phil and Matt Dunn took the stage for the rerelease of their new CD Gold on Black Ice (Deluxe Edition). A walk through the basement of the Paramount Theatre is like a walk through time: its history is literally written on the walls. Over the years, many of the estimated 10,000 visiting artists have left their mark on the famed theatre by signing the walls downstairs, just outside the dressing rooms. Sometimes you see them flitting by in the wind on a city street like a brightly colored bird. Sometimes you see them posted on telephone poles. You see others on walls inside clubs.

I’m talking about music posters. While they are silent in sound, their designs portend grand audio and visual experiences to come, as bands perform at a certain time and place.

For poster collectors, the memories these powerful scraps of paper evoke can be potent. Colored lights, sounds, lyrics, emotions, jockeying for the best position to see the stage, that special night at a club that doesn’t exist anymore…except in your mind.

If you’re like me and are prone to serious FOMO (“Fear Of Missing Out,” as the youths call it), South By Southwest can be a very stressful time of year. Every March, SXSW attracts thousands of music, film and technology enthusiasts from all over the world to participate in much-talked-about concerts, film premieres, interactive events and more. Along with this influx of entertainment and people come hundreds of parties, many of which don’t require any sort of festival credential to attend.

Sounds great, right? This means you can enjoy free SXSW events and parties without having to sell your Volvo in order to purchase a swanky badge.

It Started in a Living Room

The concept of One Page Salon started several years ago when Owen Egerton and his wife wanted to hang out with fellow creative types, drink wine and share ideas. Egerton, a lifelong writer, was fascinated by the flow of thought and creativity at these hangouts and wanted to foster an environment where a wide range of people could express their ideas publicly and get feedback. No matter how you say it, we’re buying into the art and creativity behind these boozey concoctions and School House Pub is handing out the grades. You may not receive a paper certificate or a gold star, but you will get a 101 style education about some of the cocktail worlds most recognizable trends, classic techniques and the history behind recipes, plus fun tasting sessions.
