Winter weather in Texas is consistent in one aspect: its inconsistency. Regardless of the weather outdoors, here are 9 Austin bars offering winter drinks for any type of weather. [Read more…]
After a seven-year run, East Side Showroom bid adieu last July, after owners Trudy and Mickie Spencer announced plans to revamp the bar and lounge completely. A few weeks later, an Asian-inspired concept called Ah Sing Den rose from the metaphorical ashes, in East Side Showroom’s place on East Sixth Street.
The Spencers’ vision for Ah Sing Den came from the venue’s namesake, an opium den in East London that was famous in the Victorian era. In the den, it was said both Charles Dickens and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle found creative inspiration. I was invited to stop by recently to sample Ah Sing Den’s new menu and find some inspiration of my own. [Read more…]
When I venture out for a stiff drink in a short glass, I seek a setting that rouses a sense of romance and sparks my imagination, where skillfully crafted cocktails are served. As someone who finds herself mired in the aesthetics of a room, the ambiance of a bar is important.
Sometimes you just want a beer and burger at the neighborhood joint, but other times you want to embark on an upscale, booze-fueled adventure that transports you to another time and place. In the case of the latter, here are my top five picks for the most stylish bars in Austin. [Read more…]
While the word revelry means “lively and noisy festivities, especially when these involve drinking a large amount of alcohol,” according to Oxford Dictionary, don’t let Revelry Kitchen + Bar fool you. Their food inspires just as much merriment as their cocktails. Even better, all the festivities won’t leave you broke.
One of the newest spots on East Sixth Street, Revelry strives to give revelers an affordable, boisterous and inviting choice among the many watering holes in the area. I went for Sunday brunch and stayed for the drinks. Every aspect of Revelry Kitchen + Bar is on point. Here’s all you need to know before heading there. [Read more…]
The Tigress Pub has been crafting cocktails since 2010 and was one of the first bars in Austin to partake in the cocktail revolution. Because they take their craft seriously, they’ve become one of our city’s top neighborhood bars in the process.
I chatted with owner Pam Pritchard about how The Tigress Pub came to be, while sampling drinks from the new October menu. Here’s everything you need to know. [Read more…]
They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but the bar scene in Austin tells a different story. This summer, we’ve welcomed three new cocktail bars to our city. If something seems familiar about these newbies, it’s because this isn’t their owners’ first rodeo here in the ATX. From the people who brought us favorites like Easy Tiger, 24 Diner and drink.well., these siblings are on the fast track to success.
Interestingly, each of these spaces calls upon the past for inspiration. In a city that has experienced growing pains in search of the new and noteworthy, these bars offer a fresh look back. [Read more…]

Icenhauer’s has been a favorite drinking hole on Rainey Street since 2010. Except, it’s not really a hole at all. The history of its thoughtfully-renovated structure dates back to 1895, when it was built as a “wing and gable” house. Today, Icenhauer’s is home to an exceptionally friendly staff, crafting a plethora of uniquely infused cocktails.
There are plenty of opportunities to try their brand new summer drink menu, created by General Manager Stuart Thompson. Happy hour at Icenhauer’s is from 4-9 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday and 4-7 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. As a bonus, you can get 25 percent off all cocktails named after ladies during happy hour. When it’s sweltering summer in Austin, sometimes all you want is a sweet and refreshing drink. Unfortunately, most cocktails aren’t portable. And when they are, they come in a weird frozen pouch or mixed with some amalgamation of cheap beer and malt liquor.
A team representing a wealth of business and beverage experience has come together to form the Mighty Swell Cocktail Company whose mission is to “rescue people from the average and the artificial.” [Read more…]
Much like James Bond, I love a good cocktail. I’ve spent many an evening transfixed by the hands of a bartender as she mixes, measures, muddles and presents fabulous concoctions that tantalize my tastebuds.
The art of cocktail-making is one the eager hostess in me dreams of mastering. But more than just skill and a penchant for measuring, proper mixology requires a great deal of tools and ingredients. Thankfully, Sourced Craft Cocktails is a new company in Austin that can make anyone’s dreams of hosting grandeur a reality. What’s better: they deliver everything to your door. [Read more…]

The pop of the cork is music to my ears. The effervescent sparkle and dancing of those tiny bubbles in my flute is like holding a handful of magic.
I believe Champagne is appropriate for any occasion, not just the big celebrations in life. Though I love it on its own, it is also absolutely delightful when invited to perform in a cocktail. As you can imagine, the research for this article was really tough on me (wink, wink). But for The Austinot, Studio 512 and all of you, I powered through.
Let’s pop the cork on five of my favorite Champagne cocktails in Austin. Hopefully after you follow in my footsteps, you’ll have a better understanding of why I’m bonkers for bubbles. Cheers! [Read more…]
