May 9, 2013 by Brittany Highland 2 Comments

Every 6-8 weeks, Austin Flea gathers dozens of Austin’s most creative individuals together to showcase and sell their unique products.

The Highball hosted the event for two years.

But due to current renovations there, The Rattle Inn has stepped up as host. The March 2013 event at 610 Nueces (off W. 6th St.) was jam-packed with vendors: downstairs in the bar and lounge area, upstairs on the patio, and lining the sidewalk along Nueces. [Read more…]

Attendance Explodes at Moontower Comedy & Oddity Festival 2013

Moontower Comedy & Oddity Festival The Parish

Moontower attendees wait for a show outside The Parish

This guest blog post is by Kelly Love.

The Moontower Comedy & Oddity Festival – yes, another festival in Austin! – premiered last year at main stage presenter Paramount Theatre. In its second year, the festival brought over 100 talented funny people here from April 24-27 2013.

This year’s fest saw a rise in attendance and badge sales, along with the introduction of midnight headliner performances at the Paramount. As with most festivals, it’s impossible to be everywhere at once. But since Bill Hader of SNL fame was one of this year’s headliners, I’ll give you a summary as Hader’s popular NYC club-hopping character Stefon (who made an appearance during his show) would put it (it helps to read the following in Stefon’s voice): [Read more…]

Do you like shiny things? Does the smell of hot glue make your pulse race? Do you truly believe that 3D printing is the wave of the future?

Then it’s time to have a little conversation about Austin Mini Maker Faire! This one-day gathering at the Palmer Events Center on Sunday, May 5th, brings together the city’s most dedicated crafters and tinkerers, with exhibits covering the complete spectrum of handmade, from Arduino to Zoo (Robot Petting Zoo, that is).

Also featured: Tinkering Workshop, 3D printers, an inflatable planetarium, and a special exhibit from the Austin Bike Zoo (two zoos!). [Read more…]

Bandana Ball Gives Hope to Children & Their Families in Central Texas

March 27, 2013 by Eric Highland 4 Comments

Brooke Hester at 2013 Bandana Ball

Brooke Hester’s spirit of joy and hope was contagious at the 2013 Bandana Ball

Twirling and dancing on the lush green grass of Wild Onion Ranch, a little girl was wearing heart shaped sunglasses and sporting a smile that could melt a heart of stone. Though she was surrounded by a thousand other people, including philanthropists, press members, and even celebrities, she was clearly the star of the show.

And rightfully so.

Two years ago, five and a half year old Brooke Hester was diagnosed with Stage IV High Risk Neuroblastoma, a cancer that is common among infants and children, and difficult to treat. Upon learning the news, Brooke’s parents Beau and Jessica committed to do whatever was necessary, traveling wherever they needed to in order to find a cure. [Read more…]

What’s All the Fuss About the Austin Music Awards?

March 25, 2013 by Brittany Highland Leave a Comment

Bill Carter and the Blame with Gary Clark Jr. at Austin Music Awards

Bill Carter and the Blame performs with Gary Clark Jr. at Austin Music Awards 2013

It may happen only one night a year, but the reverberations last all year long. In a city where music is everything, there isn’t a local band within earshot that wouldn’t love to see their name in lights at the Austin Music Awards.

The 31st annual Austin Music Awards took place at the height of SXSW 2013 at Austin Music Hall. Much-loved Austin musicians like Ben Kweller, Alejandro Escovedo, Brownout, and Gary Clark Jr. graced the stage, and there were even rumored sightings of Johnny Depp.

There are similarities between the Austin Music Awards and awards shows like the Grammys or the Country Music Awards that you might see on television. But if you’re going to give up a night in Austin during one of the most exciting times of the year – and shell out a little bit of cash in the process – I want to make sure you know what you’re in for. HONK!TX Brings Texas-Sized Ruckus to Austin’s Streets

February 11, 2013 by Guest Blogger 5 Comments

Brass Bands Perform at HONK TX AustinThis guest blog post is by Mikaela Thomas.

As you’ve probably noticed, Austin has about as many festivals as it has Mexican Free-Tailed Bats. That tells you everything you need to know about this town: we love community, we applaud creativity, and we have an insatiable hunger for fun.

In that spirit, a small troupe of Austin locals, myself among them, set out in 2010 to bring a spectacular and totally new kind of festival to the heart of the Lone Star State. It’s a high-energy sonic invasion that draws brass bands from around the continent each spring to fill our streets with three days of nonstop music. Welcome to HONK!TX. [Read more…]

Top 5 Survival Tips for Carnaval Austin

January 30, 2013 by Laura Darby 3 Comments

Carnaval at the Palmer Events Center in Austin

Palmer Events Center on Carnaval night

One of the first things I noticed upon moving to Austin is the proclivity for dress up parties.

In New York, any costume you wear you have to wear on the subway, which is probably why people end up just going pantsless.

Carnaval Brasileiro is a popular event that happens during the “coldest” time of year in Austin, ironic considering the standard levels of nudity that pass for costumes at the yearly event.

There is a yearly theme. Last year, it was the Wizard of Oz. This year, the theme is Peter Pan. The theme is not overtly stated in any of the website content, but novice Carnaval attendees can be easily distinguished by their lack of theme adherence. [Read more…]

Austin City-Wide Garage Sale Draws Thousands to Palmer Events Center

January 14, 2013 by Eric Highland Leave a Comment

Citywide_Garage_Sale_Austin_ClothingLet’s face it. Most of us love a good garage sale. Unfortunately, most of them are mediocre at best, and high quality stuff is often tough to find.

On top of that, you have to drive around all over town looking for the next place, only to find that some early bird beat you to the item that was listed on the ad.

No thanks.

What if you could go to a city-wide garage sale in Austin where there were a ton of vendors all in one indoor space? A sale where every vendor is sure to bring their best because they have to pay to rent the space out to sell their wares?

Enter the Austin City-wide Garage Sale at the Palmer Events Center. [Read more…]

Colorful Words and People Fly: Austin Professional Wrestling Events

December 19, 2012 by David Thomas 6 Comments

Professional Wrestling at the Mohawk Club in Austin

Did you know that Austin professional wrestling events have existed since 2006? Did you know that the Mohawk Club on 10th and Red River has been hosting these events? Now you do. What are you going to do about it?

The Promotion

Anarchy Championship Wrestling (ACW) was founded by Austin locals Darin Childs, Rachel Summerlyn and their former partner, Jacob Ladder, in 2006. Since then, they have been holding monthly events on Sundays and dividing their time between Austin and Live Oak, Texas. With roughly six different title belts constantly changing hands, there is rarely a dull moment in the ring at ACW events. [Read more…]
