Let’s start with agreeing that we love Austin. We all want to make our city the best Austin imaginable, right? What if I told you it can be done, with the help of each and every one of us? There are major issues plaguing the city that one individual can’t fix alone. But with all of us working together, we can make a difference.

Evolve Austin is a new non-profit organization looking to support Austinites on this journey. [Read more…]

Consciously Crafted Chameleon Cold-Brew Coffee Captivates Crowds

October 16, 2015 by Jessica Pino Leave a Comment

Chameleon Cold-Brew Coffee

Editor’s Note: Chameleon was purchased by Nestle in November 2017.

Cold brew coffee is growing in popularity around the U.S. and in Austin specifically. But I’ll be the first to admit I used to have no clue what cold brew really meant.

As it turns out, cold brew is not taking hot coffee and pouring it over ice. So what is it? I decided to go to locally-crafted and consciously-brewed Chameleon Cold-Brew for the answer. After all, they proclaim to be “The very best coffee you will ever taste. Period.” [Read more…]

16 Pro Tips for Making the Most of ACL Music Fest

October 1, 2015 by Jessica Pino Leave a Comment

Pro Tips for ACL Music Fest

On the verge of celebrating its 13th birthday, ACL Music Festival continues to outdo itself year after year. I’ve been attending the festival for the past seven years and, each time around, I’ve either gotten a little smarter, or the festival has gotten a little better. Or maybe it’s a combination of both. ACL has become a well-oiled machine, from coordinated shuttles to the quality of local eats. Even the Porta Potties don’t (completely) stink.

In seven years, I’ve realized some unofficial do’s and don’ts for the event, such as: Don’t drink too much alcohol, and do drink plenty of water. Seems obvious, right? Wrong! It probably took me two ACLs to learn that one…the hard way.

In the interest of saving you from the difficulties I experienced the hard way, here are some of my best pro tips for enjoying ACL Music Fest, no matter which weekend you attend. [Read more…]

Gary Clark Jr. Is Austin Music Legend in the Making

Gary Clark Jr. Austin City Limits Taping

Gary Clark Jr. is making Austin proud once again. In anticipation of his latest album, The Story of Sonny Boy Slim, Clark performed during an ACL taping for the show’s upcoming 41st season. I cannot quite put into words how energizing and entertaining it is to watch Gary Clark Jr. perform live. But I’ll try.

Then vs. Now: Austin’s Changing Landscape and Our Role

September 3, 2015 by Jessica Pino 3 Comments

Austin TX Is Changing

The city of Austin is making news daily. It has appeared in more Top 10 lists than I can reference. But with all these accolades come the naysayers. So today, I want to try something different. I’m not going to rant, rave or try to discourage people from moving here (or convince them to move here, for that matter). Instead, I hope to encourage all of you to support and love the city in which you live. Support small business, your neighbors, strangers and local art. Actively participate in the city you call home–don’t just use it. [Read more…]

Move Over, Blue Bell! NadaMoo Is Coming Through

NadaMoo! Frozen Dessert scoops

When I found out I was allergic to dairy, I was devastated. No more lattes, no more caprese salads and–worst of all–no more ice cream.

Until I found NadaMoo! I don’t dare tell people it’s vegan ice cream because there is still a stigma that vegan = no flavor. But this organic, dairy-free, coconut based frozen dessert is far from that stereotype. It’s amazing! And best of all, it’s local to Austin.

I sat down with Daniel Nicholson of NadaMoo! to get the inside scoop (pun intended) and give you a look behind the coconut curtain. [Read more…]

5 Up and Coming Austin Musicians to Watch

August 4, 2015 by Jessica Pino 8 Comments

Austin Musicians to Watch

Austin has a lot of nicknames: ATX, Bat City, the Violet Crown, Liberal City of Texas, Hippie Haven. But the nickname that rings true to everyone who calls Austin home is the Live Music Capital of the World. Not Texas, not the U.S., but the entire world! It goes without saying that choosing only five up and coming Austin musicians to watch is quite difficult.

I don’t typically like using standard musical genres to describe music because musicians are often so much more dynamic than one label describes. But for the sake of this article, I try to cover a variety of genres.

And I’m not saying these five are the ONLY bands to watch. They’re simply in my top five at the moment. If I see any of them scheduled to play a show, I make it a point to go watch. And I hope you will, too.

So without further ado, here’s my list of five Austin musicians you should watch and add to your playlist immediately. [Read more…]

Laughter Is the Best Medicine: Join the Stand Up Empire

July 20, 2015 by Jessica Pino Leave a Comment

Stand up Comedy at Empire Control Room

All this talk about the changing landscape of the Red River District is enough to make you cry. But there’s something new to the area that can help: stand up comedy.

Austin’s comedy scene has been left largely unexplored by many Austinites. Until now. One of newest open mic nights in town, Stand Up Empire at Empire Control Room & Garage, is proof that Austin’s comedy scene is on the rise. [Read more…]
