Teacher of the Year Mindful Classrooms

The mindfulness movement has made its way into our daily lives, yet some still don’t completely understand what mindfulness really is, or how it can benefit them and their communities.

Mindfulness is the purposeful attention on the present moment—the awareness of your thoughts and actions—and accepting these thoughts without judgement. Studies have proven that mindfulness, in both adults and children, improves both mental and physical health. So why aren’t we all practicing mindfulness everyday? Perhaps it’s the lack of understanding and/or training.

James Butler, Austin Independent School District Teacher of the Year and Pre-K teacher at Gullett Elementary School, is determined to change this. He’s bringing mindfulness into Austin classrooms with his Mindful Classrooms Curriculum. I spoke with Butler about his program and the importance of bringing mindfulness to Austin. [Read more…]

Imagine being handcuffed to a wall with no sign of freedom other than a small, wooden, locked box. Now imagine half your team is in an adjacent room, also handcuffed to a wall. This is how The Austinot bloggers decided to spend their Thursday evening: trying to escape from Prison Break at Austin Panic Room.

While we can’t give you answers to the puzzles, here are some tips to surviving Austin Panic Room, and having fun while you’re doing it. [Read more…]

February 26, 2016 by Jessica Pino 9 Comments

Torchy's Tacos Queso

Almost as sacred as the mighty breakfast taco, queso is Austin’s liquid gold.

But not all queso is created equally. Some comes plain, some with garnish and some “cowboy style.” But one thing’s for sure. This ooey-gooey goodness has been perfected in our capital city.

While I do have an opinion on who reigns the queso kingdom in Austin, I’ve decided to simply share with you the top six quesos every person must try in order to be considered an Austinite. You can decide for yourself which one is the best. [Read more…]

Austin indie pop band MCG has only been around two years, but their dedication, talent and sound are that of a seasoned, mature band. Their recent vinyl release party at Empire Control Room drew an excited crowd, ready to dance, and MCG did not disappoint!

I sat down with the band after the show to get an inside look at their quick rise in Austin. [Read more…]

Guide to Austin’s Dirty Sixth Street

February 4, 2016 by Jessica Pino 49 Comments

Dirty Sixth Street Austin

Whether you love it or loath it, Sixth Street is one of the most iconic streets in Austin. It’s the epicenter of what made Austin the “Live Music Capital of the World.”

There are three sections of Sixth Street in Austin: West, East and what locals refer to as Dirty. West Sixth is the section of Sixth Street that runs west from Congress Avenue. For the most part, the nightlife scene ends at North Lamar Boulevard.

Technically, and according to street signs, East Sixth starts at Congress Avenue and runs east, but that’s not what you’ll hear from locals. We refer to the section of Sixth Street that stretches from Congress Avenue to I-35 as Dirty Sixth. Then East Sixth is anything east of I-35. Don’t get confused by the street signs; you’ll be talking like a local in no time.

There are actually quite a few wonderful businesses on Dirty Sixth that aren’t as “dirty” as you might imagine.

What to Do When It's Raining in Austin

Click Play on the podcast player above to listen to our Austinot Podcast, recorded in September 2012. In this episode, we cover local spots like Blazer Tag, Alamo Drafthouse and Texas Military Forces Museum. We’ve collected many more places to share since then, so read on for more ideas!

Let’s all agree that Alamo Drafthouse is any Austinite’s go-to rainy day activity. And if you’re like me, procrastination often keeps your from finding a seat when you want it most.

Fortunately, Austin is an amazing city filled with tons of stuff to do that doesn’t have to take place on an outdoor patio. So you can either stay inside and mope, or go out with friends and explore some of these amazing things to do when it’s raining in Austin. [Read more…]

Compost Pedallers Austin

Creating compost from organic waste (Credit: Compost Pedallers)

Imagine Austin in 2040 as a zero waste city. That’s right. Our city has committed to reducing the amount of trash sent to landfills by 90 percent by 2040.

But what does that really mean? How does a city, and its citizens, reach such an audacious goal? Especially when the task at hand will take 25 years to complete? I sat down with Dustin Fedako, Compost Pedallers’ CEO–Compost Education Officer as he refers to it–to talk about composting in Austin, the laws taking effect in 2016 and how his company is paving the way by diverting organics in Austin. December 16, 2015 by Jessica Pino 1 Comment

24 Hours in South Austin

If you only had 24 hours in Austin, what would you do? This is a loaded question for such a fabulous town. And the answer depends on so many things, like what part of town you’re in, what you like, how old you are and your budget.

When creating this “ultimate itinerary,” I decided to use all 24 hours. Because…why not? I also decided to focus the itinerary in South Austin, to get the most out of those 24 hours by avoiding traffic situations. You can do most of this itinerary on foot or by bike. You can also do it any time of year.

So here it is. The best 24 hours of your life…in South Austin. [Read more…]
