If coq au vin and E.Dehillerin make your heart flutter, and if cookbooks, copper and cast iron make you weak in the knees, you’re in luck. Those who appreciate the art of cooking, rejoice! A slice of nirvana exists in Austin that will leave your kitchen fancies fulfilled: Métier Cook’s Supply.

This shop is a labor of love for husband and wife owners, Todd Duplechan and Jessica Maher. Neither are new to the world of culinary arts. In January 2012, the couple opened Lenoir, a small restaurant with an enchanting outdoor wine garden.

You ever just want to wake up at 6:30 AM on a Sunday, strip naked and lock yourself in a pitch black, soundproof tank filled with water for an hour and a half? I know, right? Sounds so good.

Well, that’s exactly what happened at the newly opened Liquid Floats in North Austin. And what did I do while trapped inside what’s referred to as a sensory deprivation tank? Nothing. That’s right – I just lay there, floating in about 10 inches of Epsom salt-filled water, and did nothing. Everyone knows that Austin has a style all its own. From the bars on 6th Street to the bleachers of DKR, a mix of creativity and southern charm comes out of every sundress, kimono and pair of culots.

But for me, style starts from the ground up. I adore shoes. From the depths of my soul (and soles) I feel a primal desire for shoes that some people understand, and others do not. They are just my “thing.” I love the way a certain pair of shoes can change the way I carry myself or even boost my confidence. I love getting a killer pair of designer heels as much as I love discovering a cool pair of vintage boots tucked away in a nook inside some cute little shop. And I definitely love wearing a favorite pair, having a crazy good time while doing so, and reliving that memory every time I get those shoes back out of the box again. There is no place better than Austin for a blossoming adventuress such as myself to have landed.

As host of Studio512, I bring viewers all of the great things the city has to offer. Oftentimes, that’s done in the studio. But as much as possible, I like to get out and explore the shops, events, parks and restaurants that make Austin the perfect place to call home. The city of Austin is hot, really hot. And not just outside, but in the eyes of the rest of the country. We’ve always been known for live music, and our food scene is gaining nationwide attention, too. But men’s fashion? Not so much.

Billy Nachman and Hobson Brown knew as much, but they noticed an unaddressed gap in the market and thought they could tap into the “cool Austin” vibe our city has become known for. So they founded Criquet Shirts.

What started as a vintage-preppy golf shirt morphed into a brand that fully embraces the Austin aesthetic. “We couldn’t have selected a better city, Austin represented cool, yet still accessible,” founder Billy Nachman told me at the Criquet Clubhouse on South 1st Street. [Read more…]
