I Can’t Believe I Didn’t Know About Corona Cafe

July 18, 2012 by Eric Highland 15 Comments

Left to right: Kesley, Austin and Sunny White of Corona Cafe

When three young adults ages 19, 17 and 16 are the owners and operators of an Austin cafe, you’d probably expect mediocrity and anticipate the worst.

But you would be wrong. Very wrong.

Enter Austin (19), Kesley (17) and Sunny (16): Native Austinites and the children of Greg and Jenn White.

If you’ve been looking for that perfect gem of a coffee shop in Austin, we’ve found it. Located in the Windsor Park neighborhood, Corona Cafe is unlike any other cafe in the city. [Read more…]

Corner Bar: Where Everybody Knows Your Name

July 11, 2012 by Eric Highland 5 Comments

Corner Bar is on South Lamar by Austin PizzaOkay, so it isn’t Cheers. But whenever I’ve been to the Corner Bar in Austin, I’ve found that feel of familiarity. Customers are frequently greeted by name, and even new patrons are welcomed as if they had been there several times before.

Corner Bar is a small location in the growing South Lamar area, but the atmosphere is always friendly and welcoming. [Read more…]

Guest Blog: Guide to Specialty Drinks in Austin

Pickletini at Kung Fu Saloon in Austin

Pickletini at Kung Fu Saloon

This guest blog post is by Chris Lloyd.

Austin is a town that enjoys a drink or two (or more). Most of us have a favorite drink — our standard cocktail that we can order just about anywhere. But sometimes you may want to try something a little different. Here are some Austin options for the next time you’re in that situation.

Kung Fu Saloon prides itself on its pickle shots. Some swear the salt from the pickle juice helps with hangovers. I think it’s just a way to laugh at your friends’ faces after they drink it. There isn’t much to them, just a shot of vodka chased with a shot of pickle juice. I have seen some brave souls be more creative with pickle juice as an ingredient, though. Would you believe a pickle martini? If that doesn’t sound appetizing, you can always order one of Kung Fu’s specialty sake bombs. [Read more…]

Search for the Best Burger Joint in Austin: Mighty Fine Burgers

July 3, 2012 by Eric Highland 26 Comments

Mighty Fine Burger Fries ShakesI’m a huge burger fan. Anyone who knows me knows that burgers are one of my all-time favorite foods. If my metabolism weren’t so darn slow, I’d eat them four days a week. I’m always looking for that next great burger joint.

When I first started blogging in Austin, I wanted to do a series on the best burgers in town, so I started actively looking for recommendations on places to go from friends and colleagues. [Read more…]

Coolhaus Food Truck Cools Austinites Down for Texas Summer

July 2, 2012 by Brittany Highland 2 Comments

Coolhaus food truck at E. 6th St. and WallerWhat other Austin food trucks do you know that offer discount passwords like “Vivanta Hotel” or “Sydney Opera House”? At first, the architectural references may seem out of character for a purveyor of ice cream sandwiches. But dig a bit deeper into the story of Coolhaus and it should start to make sense.

Founders Natasha and Freya met through a mutual friend at Cornell University. The two fast friends had something in common that not everyone does: a passion for architecture. Natasha was a student of the art who wanted to make architecture “fun and accessible.” Freya had a background in real estate and construction. Both women saw the principles they cared about being devalued, due to the recession. [Read more…]

Johnny T’s BBQ: Mouthwatering Texas Joint in Round Rock

June 13, 2012 by Eric Highland 4 Comments

I’m always looking for those great Texas BBQ spots anywhere close to Austin, and you know that when I’ve found one I’m going to share it. Those that have kept up with the Austinot also know that when we review a spot, we shoot straight from the hip.

Recently, Brittany and I were out and about just north of Austin in the Round Rock area. We were hungry after a long day of work, so we did a quick search on our phones and found that people were pretty happy with Johnny T’s BBQ. We decided to check it out for ourselves. [Read more…]

The Austinot Tex-Mex Food Challenge #5: El Mercado

June 11, 2012 by Dustin Vegas 3 Comments

Summer is well on its way, and this weeked I had a chance to beat the heat at El Mercado. So far during The Austinot Tex-Mex Food Challenge, I’ve learned that the title of “Best Tex-Mex in Austin” is very subjective. Plus, it takes a ton of time and work for an out-of-state immigrant like myself to fully understand it.

Despite these hurdles, I can do my civic duty by telling people a bit about some Tex-Mex places they haven’t visited yet. Check it out! [Read more…]

Guest Blog: The Mighty Cone – Pioneer Among Austin Food Trucks

June 6, 2012 by Guest Blogger 1 Comment

The Mighty Cone is a pioneer among Austin food trucksEditor’s Note: Since The Mighty Cone’s food trailer court shut down on South Congress, they relocated to The Picnic at 1720 Barton Springs Road.

This guest blog post is by Kristin Sheppard.

Austin is inundated with so many fantastic food trucks that it’s easy to forget they weren’t always here. In the last couple years there’s been a sonic boom, with gourmet delights exploding from every vacated Airstream, bus, and trailer. Each day it seems that new ground is broken and we are testing the limits of what complicated concoctions can be produced in a tiny room on wheels. Mere street food is elevated to an art form, and isn’t that the way it should be? [Read more…]

Austin Coffee Shops Hunt #5: Hip and Young at Thunderbird Coffee

June 4, 2012 by Dustin Vegas 4 Comments

As you arrive at Thunderbird Coffee on Koenig, you’ll probably first notice how it glitzes up an otherwise drab street. Dogs and their owners may be lounging on the open-air patio. Bay windows cover most of the available wall space, allowing natural light to filter into the coffee house. The spacious interior of Thunderbird is marked by pastel-colored walls and obtuse hanging lanterns. If it’s not too packed, grab a seat at a table or couch.

Established in 2007,  this coffee shop is where people come together – the type of place where you and yours can grab drinks and chat. Though the music may seem a bit too overbearing for casual studying, you’ll probably see many people clicking away at their laptops regardless. There aren’t many power outlets available, so those who do study will probably be planted for a while. The clientele is mostly composed of hip twenty-somethings who have time to kill. Still, the drinks and food at Thunderbird have cultivated a community of regulars of all ages. [Read more…]

Austin Coffee Shops Hunt #4: Bennu Coffee

May 30, 2012 by Dustin Vegas Leave a Comment

At first glance, Bennu Coffee adds a touch of elegance to the Austin coffee shops scene. Walk through its doors and you’ll see high-backed chairs surrounding varnished tables and counter tops. Elegant sofas line the walls beneath paintings and pictures from local artists. A grandfather clock slowly ticks across the room.

Look a little deeper though, scratch beneath the surface, and you’ll find that Bennu Coffee is more than an upscale coffee house. Over the years, it has partnered with many environmental, social and cultural organizations to make Austin, Texas a better place to live. Plus the coffee is delicious and it’s a great place to study – that too. [Read more…]
