Romance at Austin Italian Restaurants: Carmelo’s Ristorante Italiano

February 6, 2013 by Laura Darby 2 Comments

Carmelo's Italian Restaurant in Austin

Find Carmelo’s at 504 E. 5th St.

Want a taco? Austin has a million places to go to get one. Some BBQ? Absolutely. But until I visited Carmelo’s downtown, I wasn’t sure that I could experience really wonderful Italian food in our southern capital city.

The trope of the romantic Italian restaurant is pervasive in movies and TV. Sadly most Italian restaurant experiences don’t measure up to their cinema counterparts, and we just have to be glad that they don’t simulate scenes from The Godfather and that we can walk out alive. From red and white gingham table cloths to greasy, undercooked garlic knots, a lot of Italian restaurants are too cheesy in every sense of the word. [Read more…]

With the Highball Closed, Does Kung Fu Saloon Measure Up?

January 21, 2013 by Laura Darby Leave a Comment

Kung Fu Saloon is located on 6th St. in Austin, TX

After the holidays, I resumed my search for a replacement to the Highball. Of course, no two places are identical. But the Highball had provided me a place to eat and drink, and offered more entertainment than just watching my drunk friends fall down. Thus far on my search, I’ve visited The Goodnight and The Common Interest. These spots aren’t trying to be The Highball, but each has elements of entertainment that overlap with The Highball in some way.

This time, I tried out Kung Fu Saloon on 6th Street. It has a much different vibe than [Read more…]

Alamo Springs Cafe: Burger Heaven Near Fredericksburg

Alamo Springs Cafe Known for Best Texas Burgers

The Alamo Springs Cafe

For the longest time, Alamo Springs Cafe didn’t have a website. AlamoSpringsCafe.com redirected to a Facebook page. They are out in the middle of nowhere. And none of this bothers them in the least.

When your burgers are this good, you don’t need to worry about silly little details like location and a functional website. I mean, who needs all that to be successful, right?

From the Alamo Spring’s Cafe Facebook About page:

“Inconveniently  located in the middle of nowhere” between Fredericksburg and Comfort. Laid-back atmosphere, serious food, and ice cold beer. We were on the Cover of Texas Monthly “Best Burgers in Texas ” issue (August 2009) [Read more…]

Mozart’s Coffee on Lake Austin Delights Eyes and Taste Buds

Main indoor seating area at Mozart’s Coffee Roasters

In mid-2012, our good friend Dusty Vegas wrote a popular Austinot series that was descriptively titled “Austin Coffee Shop Hunt.”

Over time, we’ve featured other delightful coffee spots including Dominican Joe, Kick Butt Coffee, Austin Java and Corona Cafe.

I’ve decided to bring back the coffee talk by reviewing one of my favorite coffee shops in Austin: Mozart’s Coffee Roasters on Lake Austin.

Once upon a time, when life was simpler yet somehow seemed incredibly difficult, I was a college student. A friend introduced me to Mozart’s down on Lake Austin, and I was enchanted. [Read more…]

Galaxy Cafe in Austin

Editor’s Note: Galaxy Cafe’s Triangle location is closing April 15, 2018. Three other locations remain open: West Lynn, Brodie Lane, and Mesa Drive.

This guest blog post is by Kat Mandelstein.

This post is the fifth review in a series on The Austinot. It’s the companion of the Search for the Best Burger Joint in Austin by Austinot owner, Eric Highland, who is not a vegetarian or vegan. That’s where I come in.

If you’re a true carnivore, be sure to check out his series. But if you’ve been looking for the best veggie burger in Austin, you’re in the right place. All the post titles in my series begin with “Harvesting the Best Veggie Burger in Austin.”
