“My whole life was art, art, art,” Natalie Sideserf told me recently during a happy hour meeting downtown. Not surprisingly, her interests led her to study art at Ohio State. But Natalie didn’t choose to apply her training to clay or plaster. Instead, in a turn of events that may have seemed odd to onlookers, she decided on an unconventional artistic medium: cake.

Foodheads: Tempting Sandwich Secret in Central Austin

An old wooden house on West 34th Street is home to Foodheads, a hidden mecca of breakfast, lunch and dinner delicacies. Homemade sandwiches, soups, salads and more are served fresh daily. This Austin treasure has been my little secret, my go-to lunch spot, but I can’t help sharing it with you.

Early on a Saturday (see my insider tip below on when to dine here), my sister, my friend and I arrived outside the ornate house. A short line settled our roaring stomachs and awoke our zealous taste buds.

The Environment

Eclectic outdoor seating surrounds Foodheads. Long picnic tables line one side of the house. Individual tables are dispersed for a more intimate experience. Opening a bar in Austin is like entering the Thunderdome: two bars enter, one bar leaves. I have watched them come and go through the years. Themed bars, dives, sports bars, college bars – many pop up, trying to dominate their niches, but few have have staying power. Personally, no bar has held my attention long enough to make me a regular. All save one: Draught House Pub and Brewery.
