Craft Cocktails Without Pretense at North Loop’s Tigress Pub
The Tigress Pub has been crafting cocktails since 2010 and was one of the first bars in Austin to partake in the cocktail revolution. Because they take their craft seriously, they’ve become one of our city’s top neighborhood bars in the process.
I chatted with owner Pam Pritchard about how The Tigress Pub came to be, while sampling drinks from the new October menu. Here’s everything you need to know. [Read more…]
Breathing New Life Into Historic Scoot Inn’s Funky Old Bones
Why do dive bars capture our hearts so much? Historic Scoot Inn has tenaciously hung in there as one of the most popular dive bars in Austin. And now this east side venue has swept out the cobwebs with a facelift for its 145th birthday.
That’s right: this beloved East 4th Street location has served as some type of local business since 1871. While Historic Scoot Inn still possesses a tattered, endearing charm, it’s less tattered now. The owners just completed a remodel, gently nudging this East Austin icon into the modern era. [Read more…]
Yates Winery Growing Grapes and New Business in Hill Country
If you look to the right side of the road past Johnson City, heading to Hye on US-290, you’ll spot a new winery. It’s from the same family that owns Spicewood Vineyards and it bears the family name, Yates. Starting off with nine releases, Yates wants Central Texans to know there’s a new destination they should add to their Hill Country winery tour list. [Read more…]
All Aboard the Cider Flyer for Austin’s Newest Collaboration
I pulled into the Cedar Park train depot on a clear Saturday evening. Ticket in hand and stomach growling, I made my way towards the home of the Austin Steam Train. My journey on the Santa Fe Steam Engine would mark the maiden voyage of the Cider Flyer, a gastronomical collaboration between Austin Wine & Cider and the Austin Steam Train Association. [Read more…]
Prohibition Creamery Serves Booze-Infused Ice Cream in East Austin Bungalow
Austin is revered as one of the booziest American cities, hosting hundreds of bars to satisfy parched residents and tourists on steamy evenings during the summer months. In terms of other refreshing treats, Austin is also well-known for ice cream, snow cones, gelato and sorbet through establishments like Lick Honest Ice Creams and Dolce Neve.
Laura Aidan decided to combine both delights into an ice cream parlor and cocktail bar establishment called Prohibition Creamery. Opening on East 7th Street in mid-July 2016, Prohibition Creamery has already gathered an influx of fans due to its handcrafted, all-natural ingredients blended smoothly with wine and liquors such as bourbon and tequila. Duchman Family Winery: Escape to Tuscany
Guest article by Natalie Parra-Novosad
What if you could hop in the car after a long week, drive 25 minutes and end up in the Tuscan countryside sipping Italian wine? Lucky for Austinites, we can get strikingly close to this experience by visiting Duchman Family Winery in Driftwood, TX.
Duchman Family Winery is one of Texas Hill Country’s best wineries, and it’s close enough for some South Austinites to visit on a week day. As you head down the long, narrow driveway and see the Tuscan-style buildings, tall Italian cypress trees and expansive vineyard come into view, you’ll feel a bit lighter as the weight of the real world fades away. What’s New at Z’Tejas? Hatch Chile Feast, Cocktails and Cornbread for a Cause
On occasion, I enjoy a cocktail in downtown Austin. Oh, who am I kidding? Most nights, I’m on a bar stool. Living close to the famous Sixth Street, I probably have too many choices to revisit any place more than once or twice. But the one spot that keeps me coming back is Z’Tejas, for two reasons: 1) my favorite bartender, Chelsea, whose margaritas could probably fix global warming, and 2) the mac and cheese.
Recent changes at Z’Tejas have given me a few more reasons. [Read more…]
3 New South Austin Hangouts That Capture the Classic Vibe
Guest article by Joleen Jernigan
If the one constant in life is change (to loosely paraphrase Heraclitus), then Austin is as constant as they come, changing monthly to accommodate rapid growth. So it’s a genuine pleasure to find three shiny, new South Austin hangouts that honor the laid-back feel of old Austin. At least in this case, change is good. [Read more…]
Guide to Austin’s West Sixth Street
There are three sections of Sixth Street in Austin: West, East and what locals refer to as Dirty. For locals, Dirty Sixth runs from Congress to I-35 even though technically, and according to street signs, East Sixth starts at Congress Avenue and runs east. But when you hear locals talk about East Sixth, we are referencing anything east of I-35. Don’t get confused by the street signs; you’ll be talking like a local in no time.
West Sixth is the section of Sixth Street that runs west from Congress Avenue. For the most part, the nightlife scene ends at North Lamar Boulevard, but for this article I’ll take us all the way to MoPac as there are several notable bars and restaurants in the extended stretch of West Sixth.
While you’ll find your fair share of bars here–no surprise for Sixth Street–West Sixth is much more diverse when it comes to local Austin businesses. This list highlights the cream of the crop. [Read more…]
