Historic Scoot Inn has spruced up the front patio in celebration of 145 years
Why do dive bars capture our hearts so much? Historic Scoot Inn has tenaciously hung in there as one of the most popular dive bars in Austin. And now this east side venue has swept out the cobwebs with a facelift for its 145th birthday.
That’s right: this beloved East 4th Street location has served as some type of local business since 1871. While Historic Scoot Inn still possesses a tattered, endearing charm, it’s less tattered now. Austin is revered as one of the booziest American cities, hosting hundreds of bars to satisfy parched residents and tourists on steamy evenings during the summer months. In terms of other refreshing treats, Austin is also well-known for ice cream, snow cones, gelato and sorbet through establishments like Lick Honest Ice Creams and Dolce Neve.
Laura Aidan decided to combine both delights into an ice cream parlor and cocktail bar establishment called Prohibition Creamery. Opening on East 7th Street in mid-July 2016, Prohibition Creamery has already gathered an influx of fans due to its handcrafted, all-natural ingredients blended smoothly with wine and liquors such as bourbon and tequila. Duchman Family Winery is one of Texas Hill Country’s best wineries, and it’s close enough for some South Austinites to visit on a week day. As you head down the long, narrow driveway and see the Tuscan-style buildings, tall Italian cypress trees and expansive vineyard come into view, you’ll feel a bit lighter as the weight of the real world fades away. On occasion, I enjoy a cocktail in downtown Austin. Oh, who am I kidding? Most nights, I’m on a bar stool. Living close to the famous Sixth Street, I probably have too many choices to revisit any place more than once or twice. But the one spot that keeps me coming back is Z’Tejas, for two reasons: 1) my favorite bartender, Chelsea, whose margaritas could probably fix global warming, and 2) the mac and cheese.

There are three sections of Sixth Street in Austin: West, East and what locals refer to as Dirty. For locals, Dirty Sixth runs from Congress to I-35 even though technically, and according to street signs, East Sixth starts at Congress Avenue and runs east. But when you hear locals talk about East Sixth, we are referencing anything east of I-35. Don’t get confused by the street signs; you’ll be talking like a local in no time.
West Sixth is the section of Sixth Street that runs west from Congress Avenue. For the most part, the nightlife scene ends at North Lamar Boulevard, but for this article I’ll take us all the way to MoPac as there are several notable bars and restaurants in the extended stretch of West Sixth.
While you’ll find your fair share of bars here–no surprise for Sixth Street–West Sixth is much more diverse when it comes to local Austin businesses. This list highlights the cream of the crop. [Read more…]
