No More Waiting Until the Weekend Because El Burro Serves Brunch Daily

March 1, 2017 by Jessica Pino Leave a Comment

El Burro Seating Austin

El Burro is now open for lunch and brunch (Credit: Jessica Pino)

Editor’s Note: El Burro closed suddenly in July 2017.

I love checking out new restaurants because I like to experience a restaurant in its infancy stage, when it’s still learning to “walk.” It can be rewarding to watch a local restaurant come into its own. I find that younger restaurants are also more likely to take risks and experiment, as they figure out their style and role in the community they serve.

El Burro, located in the Lamar Union, is one of Austin’s infant restaurants I recently checked out. From the owners of VOX Table, El Burro opened its doors in December 2016. When they started serving brunch and lunch, I couldn’t stay away. [Read more…]

Burn Introduces Roman-Style Pizza to East Austin

Burn Pizza Austin

Burn Pizza + Bar introduces Roman-style pizza to East Austin

Editor’s Note: As of December 2016, Burn is closed.

Growing up in a pizza shop has made me a pizza connoisseur. Being Italian has made me a pizza snob. I know a thing or two about pizza, and Italian food in general.

While I still stand by my 2014 list of “5 Best Pizza Joints in Austin,” I’ve found many new spots over the past two years I’d gladly add. One of them is Burn Pizza + Bar on East Sixth Street. Before you run out to try this pie, here’s everything you need to know. [Read more…]

Austin Fermentation Festival 2015

There’s no better place to hold a festival dedicated solely to the art of fermented foods than our festival-obsessed city known for its vibrant food scene. On Oct. 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., more than 40 vendors, brewers and artisans will converge on the grounds of Barr Mansion (10463 Sprinkle Road) with one thing in common: their love of fermentation. This will be the third annual Austin Fermentation Festival, presented by Texas Farmers’ Market with the support of sponsors Whole Foods Market and Barr Mansion.

Beyond tasting a variety of your favorite fermented foods from award-winning local vendors, while enjoying live music on an enchanting, historic property, you’ll be helping to secure the livelihood of Texas farmers. Event proceeds will benefit the Texas Farmers Market Farmer Emergency Fund, which offers financial assistance to farmers and ranchers in times of environmental, personal or other crises. Isla’s Caribbean Style Draws Rum Enthusiasts to Warehouse District

August 1, 2016 by Talena Ramnath Leave a Comment

Isla Caribbean cantina Austin

Isla’s Caribbean cantina decor, cocktails and fare provide a small island retreat (Credit: Andrea Calo)

Editor’s Note: After changing its focus to Peruvian fare in December 2016, Isla closed down in May 2017.

Austinites are familiar with the Warehouse District’s Péché, a distinct absinthe bar on 4th Street that celebrates pre-Prohibition era cocktails and French cuisine made with fresh, local ingredients. Owner Rob Pate emphasizes education and intimacy within the space, cultivating an atmosphere that encourages friendly rapport between bartenders and patrons.

But if you’re searching for a lively evening with friends, Peche’s sister bar will deliver. Directly next door to Péché, Isla is a vivacious Caribbean cantina. The same executive chef, John Lichtenberger, and pastry chef, Yolanda Diaz, serve simple but impacting flavor combinations. [Read more…]

Irene's Bar Austin TX

They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but the bar scene in Austin tells a different story. This summer, we’ve welcomed three new cocktail bars to our city. If something seems familiar about these newbies, it’s because this isn’t their owners’ first rodeo here in the ATX. From the people who brought us favorites like Easy Tiger, 24 Diner and drink.well., these siblings are on the fast track to success.

Interestingly, each of these spaces calls upon the past for inspiration. In a city that has experienced growing pains in search of the new and noteworthy, these bars offer a fresh look back. [Read more…]

General Tso'Boy Austin Texas

Chinese-American meets po’ boy fusion at General Tso’Boy, located within Domain Northside’s Rock Rose district

Editor’s Note: General Tso’Boy is closed. The last day of service was Dec. 14, 2017.

Domain Northside’s Rock Rose district in North Austin is making a name for itself as Austin’s newest entertainment destination with bars, cafes and restaurants debuting constantly. General Tso’Boy, helmed by owners Jessica and Gary Wu, added their po’ boy fusion restaurant to the mix on June 21 of this year.
