Posted on February 9, 2016 by Kelli McDonald

Editor’s Note: The restaurant closed in April 2017. Lola, whose real name is Lozina, plans to relocate the restaurant to Taylor, Texas.

Twelve years ago, Lola Stephens-Bell opened Nubian Queen Lola’s Cajun Soul Food Café at Rosewood and Chicon. I visited during lunchtime on a Friday and watched as the family-style seating filled up.

Lola’s husband and a volunteer named Ellie helped to take care of the growing crowd while I spoke with Lola about her life and her mission to feed the hungry in Austin. [Read more…]

I think we’ve all struggled with the age-old question: should I go out tonight or should I stay curled up on the couch with my dog? While normally The Austinot would tell you to get off your couch and plunge into the incredible city surrounding you, Emancipet has convinced us that, for at least one day, we should definitely sit and stay in. My holiday season doesn’t get started until Trail of Lights begins. This year, Austin’s beloved event is back for its 51st year of sparkling holiday goodness.

It may be like this every year, but there seems to be an renewed energy surrounding this celebrated Austin tradition. The Trail of Lights Foundation has worked extremely hard to make the experience better than ever, while keeping the cost to Austinites down.

Trail of Lights is free for its first week, Dec. 8-15. After that, its only a $3 for ages 12+. This is a small price compared to how much it costs to keep over two million lights bright on a trail where Austinites and visitors will walk a combined million miles this season! [Read more…]

Editor’s Note: Pacific Rim has closed.

If you live or work near North Central Austin and are looking for a place to hang out and watch the game on Sunday, or just hang out and have drinks after work, Pacific Rim is the place to be. In fact, it’s one of the best places I’ve found in town for a large group outing.

Pacific Rim also have the largest variety of food I’ve seen on a menu in a while, so everyone will find something to like. The portions are substantial, so go hungry. [Read more…]

Back for its second year, the Waller Creek Conservancy’s Creek Show 2015 celebrates downtown’s bright future. Despite last year’s cold weather, more than 5,000 people turned out to stroll along Waller Creek amid creative, site-specific light installations.

The event has been expanded this year. From Nov. 12-21, 2015, Austinites can explore the beauty waiting beneath Austin’s city streets. [Read more…]

Inside Look into Austin’s Blue Cat Cafe

Blue Cat Cafe Austin

Editor’s Note: Blue Cat Cafe closed on Feb. 5, 2019.

When I heard about the first cat cafe opening in Austin, I thought of all the blog posts I’d read about businesses in Japan where people could sit and relax with resident cafe cats. The accompanying pictures depicted cozy utopias for cat lovers, and I couldn’t wait to join in. With my next thought, worry crept into my mind. Cats are notoriously particular and many don’t want anything to do with other cats. Would our Austin business be run by people who would keep that idea, along with the importance of cleanliness, in mind? And what about litter boxes?! [Read more…]
