How to Experience the Real Dry Creek Cafe, Austin Treasure Since 1953

Posted on December 12, 2016 by Ashley Alkek

Dry Creek Cafe in Austin

Welcome to Dry Creek Cafe

Have you ever walked into a bar and felt like you knew everyone in the place? In Texas-style homage to the beloved television show “Cheers,” I happily introduce Dry Creek Cafe & Boat Dock.

This cozy oasis in the hills of Austin was built in 1953 with nothing around but some houses, the creek below and Mount Bonnell right up the road. The rich history of the place was just beginning when owner Buddy Reynolds bought Dry Creek Cafe from his mother in 1984, roughly the same time Texas changed the drinking age from 18 to 21. It was important to Reynolds to keep it running, as he spent most of his childhood helping his mother, Sarah, create this special place for the community. Sarah is a legend at Dry Creek Cafe, operating the bar until she was in her 90’s. If you’re lucky, you’ll hear a sassy “Sarah” story now and then from behind the bar.

If you’re new, here’s how to have the ultimate time at Dry Creek Cafe. [Read more…]

St Elmo Brewing Co: Newest Beer Lover’s Hotspot in South Austin

Posted on November 21, 2016 by Bill Tucker

St. Elmo Brewing Austin

Fine beer and good vibes await those visiting St Elmo Brewing Co (Credit: Trey Crowe)

For years, the term “St. Elmo” conjured up images of an awful Rob Lowe movie and an amazingly cheesy John Parr song. After checking out St Elmo Brewing Co, I can add rock solid beer to that list. Situated on the same street that bears its name, this South Austin brewery looks to deliver well-crafted, quaffable beer to a neighborhood thirsty for a brand new hangout. [Read more…]

Traditionally offered in the late afternoon, high tea is served with a pot of tea and an assortment of finger sandwiches, scones with jam and clotted cream, and delicious pastries. High tea offers the opportunity for a memorable date or fun place to take your book club.

Luckily, Austin has a number of superb restaurants, tea shops, and even movie theaters where you can indulge in the full high tea experience. [Read more…]

Owner Pat Pritchard talks with guests at The Tigress Pub (Credit: The Tigress Pub)

The Tigress Pub has been crafting cocktails since 2010 and was one of the first bars in Austin to partake in the cocktail revolution. Because they take their craft seriously, they’ve become one of our city’s top neighborhood bars in the process.

I chatted with owner Pam Pritchard about how The Tigress Pub came to be, while sampling drinks from the new October menu. Here’s everything you need to know. [Read more…]

Breathing New Life Into Historic Scoot Inn’s Funky Old Bones

Posted on September 23, 2016 by Joleen Jernigan

Historic Scoot Inn turns 145

Historic Scoot Inn has spruced up the front patio in celebration of 145 years

Why do dive bars capture our hearts so much? Historic Scoot Inn has tenaciously hung in there as one of the most popular dive bars in Austin. And now this east side venue has swept out the cobwebs with a facelift for its 145th birthday.

That’s right: this beloved East 4th Street location has served as some type of local business since 1871. While Historic Scoot Inn still possesses a tattered, endearing charm, it’s less tattered now. The owners just completed a remodel, gently nudging this East Austin icon into the modern era. [Read more…]

Boarding the Cider Flyer with Austin Wine & Cider

Austin is revered as one of the booziest American cities, hosting hundreds of bars to satisfy parched residents and tourists on steamy evenings during the summer months. In terms of other refreshing treats, Austin is also well-known for ice cream, snow cones, gelato and sorbet through establishments like Lick Honest Ice Creams and Dolce Neve.

Laura Aidan decided to combine both delights into an ice cream parlor and cocktail bar establishment called Prohibition Creamery. Opening on East 7th Street in mid-July 2016, Prohibition Creamery has already gathered an influx of fans due to its handcrafted, all-natural ingredients blended smoothly with wine and liquors such as bourbon and tequila. Duchman Family Winery Driftwood Texas

Guest article by Natalie Parra-Novosad

What if you could hop in the car after a long week, drive 25 minutes and end up in the Tuscan countryside sipping Italian wine? Lucky for Austinites, we can get strikingly close to this experience by visiting Duchman Family Winery in Driftwood, TX.

Duchman Family Winery is one of Texas Hill Country’s best wineries, and it’s close enough for some South Austinites to visit on a week day. As you head down the long, narrow driveway and see the Tuscan-style buildings, tall Italian cypress trees and expansive vineyard come into view, you’ll feel a bit lighter as the weight of the real world fades away.
