Places in Austin for Locals

Credit: Holp Photography

Austin has something for everyone. Even those who don’t live here can easily find an excuse to visit the 512. Be it our Instagram-able food, waterfront views or our myriad of festivals, Austin attracts visitors like bats to the Congress Avenue bridge.

But where does it all end? Can’t we have our city to ourselves every once in awhile? Thankfully, there are a few places in the corners and crannies that the tourists haven’t discovered yet. These places offer everything Austin is known for, but they’re a bit quieter about it.

No lines, wristbands or badges, just authentic Austin for locals. So let’s take back our city! But shhh…don’t let anyone else know about it. [Read more…]

Milonga Room Speakeasy Reflects 1920s Era and Argentine Roots

Posted on March 23, 2016 by Talena Ramnath

Milonga Room Speakeasy in Austin

Restored restaurant booths, ceiling tiles and tables fabricate an eclectic but chic look at Milonga Room

Buenos Aires Café has served as an Austin staple for the past ten years, serving traditional Argentine cuisine of savory house pastas, flaky empanadas, tender asado, refreshing cocktails and more at its two locations on East 6th and in Bee Cave at the Galleria.

The cafe’s East 6th establishment, Café Este, recently renovated its menu options, incorporating more dishes that not only accentuate Buenos Aires’ specific cuisine, but also that of neighboring Argentine cities. Fresh, whole ingredients from a variety of local vendors that are prepared in-house make for a delicious meal among friends and family.

However, patrons looking for a less family-friendly atmosphere now have the opportunity to experience the restaurant’s newest space, a speakeasy called Milonga Room that boasts transportation to a past era. [Read more…]

Flightpath Coffee House: Chillin’ in Hyde Park Since 1992

Flightpath Coffee House Patio Seating

Outdoor patio seating at Flightpath Coffee House in Hyde Park

Guest article by Molly Morrow

As a woman from Seattle (okay, as a woman from a farming-valley-turned-shopping-mall that’s close enough to Seattle for me to lie without feeling bad), I can assure you that I know my way around a coffee shop. I have been in coffee shops resembling EuroDisney, coffee shops with dog balconies, coffee shops with and without a unifying central theme such as “bad art” or “bird music,” and coffee shops that looked like the vacation houses of stone-cold lunatics.

I have been in coffee shops so dimly lit and crowded with velveteen daybeds that I felt myself growing more Victorian, just staring at myself in the glass of the bakery case. I have been in thousands of coffee shops over the years, and I have judged them all without mercy.

That being said, let me tell you in the strictest of confidence: Flightpath Coffee House in Hyde Park is the single [Read more…]

The Austin beer scene has been exploding for years, and there’s no sign of it slowing down. Over 30 breweries make their home in the greater Austin area. It seems like a new one opens every month.

As a result, it’s not enough to visit one brewery. These days, you can make a day trip out of it. With four breweries in close proximity to each other, it’s possible to take a beer-drinking day trip to beautiful Dripping Springs, TX. Say Bye to the Bar With Sourced Cocktail Delivery

Sourced Cocktail Delivery

Everything you need to create your own craft cocktails is delivered in an aged bourbon barrel (Credit: Sourced)

Much like James Bond, I love a good cocktail. I’ve spent many an evening transfixed by the hands of a bartender as she mixes, measures, muddles and presents fabulous concoctions that tantalize my tastebuds.

The art of cocktail-making is one the eager hostess in me dreams of mastering. But more than just skill and a penchant for measuring, proper mixology requires a great deal of tools and ingredients. Thankfully, Sourced Craft Cocktails is a new company in Austin that can make anyone’s dreams of hosting grandeur a reality. What’s better: they deliver everything to your door. [Read more…]

Vino Vino on Guadalupe Street

Guest article by Laurie Engle

It’s the first date. You want it to be casual, but not careless, low-key, but not boring. The first date should give you both a chance to converse and get to know one another, without competing with too many distractions. The right romantic setting helps set the tone. You want something calming and special.

As a single woman in our fair city of Austin, I’ve been on my share of first dates. In fact, I’m a bit of an expert. And my “go-to” when asked to suggest the place to meet? I’m a huge fan of Vino Vino. [Read more…]

Guide to Austin’s Dirty Sixth Street

Dirty Sixth Street Austin

Whether you love it or loath it, Sixth Street is one of the most iconic streets in Austin. It’s the epicenter of what made Austin the “Live Music Capital of the World.”

There are three sections of Sixth Street in Austin: West, East and what locals refer to as Dirty. West Sixth is the section of Sixth Street that runs west from Congress Avenue. For the most part, the nightlife scene ends at North Lamar Boulevard.

Technically, and according to street signs, East Sixth starts at Congress Avenue and runs east, but that’s not what you’ll hear from locals. We refer to the section of Sixth Street that stretches from Congress Avenue to I-35 as Dirty Sixth. Then East Sixth is anything east of I-35. Don’t get confused by the street signs; you’ll be talking like a local in no time.

There are actually quite a few wonderful businesses on Dirty Sixth that aren’t as “dirty” as you might imagine.

Mean Eyed Cat Austin

Warm and welcoming with a dive bar edge: welcome to Mean Eyed Cat! (Credit: Mean Eyed Cat)

For 90% of the world, there’s only one Man in Black. Forget the Will Smith movies; ignore the X-Files. Johnny Cash, one of country music’s original rebels, is the only one who matters.

While you can trek to Nashville to pay homage, there’s a joint right here in Austin that honors the legend through its décor, drinks and demeanor. With more than just a novelty name for a dive bar, Mean Eyed Cat Bar hides quality cocktails, great food and exceptional service behind its roughneck exterior. The result is your new favorite local hangout. [Read more…]

Yard Bar Creates Dream Playground for Doggies and Their Owners

Posted on January 20, 2016 by Bill Tucker

Mr. Ming Austin Dog About Town

This is the face of a dog who needs a visit to Yard Bar

Mr. Ming was looking to get outdoors. After a long holiday season spent watching his humans shop, wrap presents  and go out, it was his turn. His time to sniff, bark and be merry.

Enter Yard Bar, Austin’s newest venue for furry friends to run, jump and be social. By combining food, drink and a variety of fun activities, this hidden gem on Burnet Road is quickly becoming the city’s premier doggy destination.

Born From Necessity

Like most things awesome, the inspiration for Yard Bar came from need. While frequenting the dog runs at Auditorium Shores, owner Kristen Heaney realized the sad reality of dog parks: there’s not much there for people to do. What if there was a place where pet owners could grab a drink and a bite while their dog frolicked in the park?

After testing a number of business models, Heaney leased the lot on Burnet Road where the old Putt-Putt Golf and Games used to live, and began building the dog park of her dreams. When it opened in August 2015, word quickly spread among Austin’s pet friendly community. Yard Bar was the place to be. [Read more…]

Blue Owl Brewing Pours Fresh Take on Austin’s Beer Scene

Posted on December 30, 2015 by Mathis Kennington

Austin’s newest urban brewery has opened on Caesar Chavez, offering a collection of rare brews you won’t find anywhere else in town. Blue Owl Brewing is Austin’s only all sour-mashed brewery. Those who know a thing or two about Austin beer might immediately think of Jester King, which for a long time has held the market on farmhouse-style sour beers.

Blue Owl brews don’t have the dramatic sour taste you might expect when you think of a tart sour beer. Instead, the one-of-a-kind sour-mash process creates a delicate sour that is gentle enough for anyone who is just trying out sour beers, yet complex enough for the pickiest of craft beer drinkers.
