It’s Always Christmas at Lala’s Little Nugget in North Austin

Posted on March 20, 2017 by Dustin Vegas

Lala's Little Nugget Austin

Lala’s Little Nugget is the definition of “hole in the wall”

Drive around Austin with anyone who has been here more than five years, and you’re likely to get into the I remember whens. I remember when downtown was boarded up and always quiet. I remember when The Domain was a field. The frenetic pace of Austin’s growth has a lot of us wishing time would stand a little more still.

Luckily, there is Lala’s Little Nugget. With all of the young, trendy bars that come and go all the time, Lala’s feels like a relic trapped in time. It’s an “old Austin” bar that has switched ownership in recent years, been renovated and somehow managed to survive in today’s bar scene. Undoubtedly one of my favorite bars in North Austin. If coffee and travel have something in common, it’s the sense of awakening they both give you. Coffee awakens your body, while traveling awakens your mind and soul. When two adventurous and energetic individuals combined two, it resulted in a brand as unique as a far-away country and as bold as your morning cup of joe.

5 Stylish Austin Bars Serving Up Cool Vibes and Inspired Cocktails

Stylish Austin Bars

When I venture out for a stiff drink in a short glass, I seek a setting that rouses a sense of romance and sparks my imagination, where skillfully crafted cocktails are served. As someone who finds herself mired in the aesthetics of a room, the ambiance of a bar is important.

Sometimes you just want a beer and burger at the neighborhood joint, but other times you want to embark on an upscale, booze-fueled adventure that transports you to another time and place. In the case of the latter, here are my top five picks for the most stylish bars in Austin. [Read more…]

Cocktails, Bar Food and Brunch at Revelry Kitchen + Bar on East Sixth

Murals Revelry Kitchen and Bar

While the word revelry means “lively and noisy festivities, especially when these involve drinking a large amount of alcohol,” according to Oxford Dictionary, don’t let Revelry Kitchen + Bar fool you. Their food inspires just as much merriment as their cocktails. Even better, all the festivities won’t leave you broke.

One of the newest spots on East Sixth Street, Revelry strives to give revelers an affordable, boisterous and inviting choice among the many watering holes in the area. I went for Sunday brunch and stayed for the drinks. Every aspect of Revelry Kitchen + Bar is on point. Here’s all you need to know before heading there. [Read more…]

Beer Lovers Seek Mort Subite for Sip of Belgium in Downtown Austin

Posted on January 16, 2017 by Bill Tucker

Mort Subite Austin

Welcome to Mort Subite, downtown Austin’s newest Belgian beer bar (credit: Bill Tucker)

With all due respect to local stouts, sours and IPA’s, I feel Belgium makes the best beer in the world. And while we have breweries dedicated to brewing in the Belgian style, it can be hard to find the real thing. Enter Mort Subite, a bar that not only specializes in beer from the land of waffles and chocolate, recreates the warmth and friendliness of a traditional Belgian pub. [Read more…]

Hole in the Wall Austin

The Hole in the Wall’s sign summons Austin residents and visitors to this iconic watering hole

Like a perfectly worn-in pair of cowboy boots, slipping into a classic dive bar to down a cold one provides true comfort. The Hole in the Wall is as divey as they come. I’m grinning from ear to ear as I order my tequila. [Read more…]

One of Austin’s most anticipated restaurant openings of the year, Eberly was unveiled on Oct. 15, 2016 as the newest restaurant addition on South Lamar, serving contemporary American cuisine.

Developed from what was an old print shop into what stands out as one of our city’s most dazzling spaces–a mix of Victorian and midcentury design aesthetics–Eberly aims to preserve the soul of Austin amid a growing population and changing landscape. As stated on their website, “Austin has always been a gathering place for risk takers, creative types and liberated thinkers. We’ve distilled that spirit into one distinctively authentic place.” [Read more…]

Best Spots to Sit & Sip a Glass of Wine in Austin

Posted on January 3, 2017 by Jessica Pino

Wine in Austin

I’m a recovering wine snob. Years ago, I only drank high-end bottles with other wine snob friends. We would eat cheese while sipping, sniffing and discussing wines. Then I moved to Italy, where delicious wines cost as little as $5.

And then it hit me.

It’s not about this varietal or that vintage, or even what pairs best with what. It’s simpler than that. Much like any alcoholic beverage of choice, you drink it because you like it. And the reason you drink is to celebrate friends, family, careers or life events.

Here are some top-notch spots to sit and sip a glass of wine in Austin with your closest friends, family or colleagues. They aren’t necessarily the most high-end in town, but they’ve got soul. [Read more…]

“Have you tried that vegan place?” isn’t an uncommon question in Austin. But when a friend of mine asked me to join her at our city’s newest plant-based gastropub, I knew I was in for something noteworthy.

The Beer Plant, located in Tarrytown next to Austin Pets Alive!, pulls together the attributes veggie-eating Austinites adore most: good food, a nice vibe and tasty drinks. [Read more…]

Lazarus Brewing Company Comes to Eastside With Pints, Pups and Tacos

Guest article by Judy Rae Merhar

At the intersection of East Sixth Street and Chicon, you’ll notice a spruced-up teal structure with a navy crest logo reading Lazarus Brewing Company. A barrage of open garage doors allow melodies to drift onto the street. Next to me is a parked pickup with a friendly golden lab wagging its tail from the truck bed. The scene appears like an open invitation to explore this new Austin brewery, and so it is.
