It’s the freakin’ weekend–time to have us some fun! Despite Super Bowl Sunday (everyone’s favorite national holiday), live music is alive and kicking this weekend. And even though most of the city will be parked in front of a TV for the big game, we have concert picks for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. This weekend, we recommend soulful Americana, evocative synth, and funky dance jams. Enjoy the weekend and listen local!
Friday, Feb. 2
Tara Williamson
@ Geraldine’s (605 Davis St.) – 10:30 p.m.
When you discover an exceptional voice, it immediately improves your day. Such is the case with backup-singer-turned-solo-artist, Tara Williamson. Dripping with honey smoked soul and clear as a shining Texas morning, Williamson’s vocals elevate her groovy Americana sound. My favorite tune is “Get On With It,” a ray of sunshine pop/soul sparkler, wrapped in a message of pure positivity. Well worth a trip to the other side of Rainey Street.

Anatomi w/Oh My Love, Solid State Dream Suit, Robby
@ Swan Dive (615 Red River St.) – 10 p.m. – $5
A stylish and satisfying blend of electronic synth, pounding dream pop, and airy, evocative vocals, Anatomi is the sort of ear candy that wiggles its way in and refuses to leave. Highlights from the band’s debut record include the crash and bang smack of “For Now” and the bouncy “Girl Afraid.”
But my favorite track from the self-titled record is “What If,” a slow burn escape from pain that explodes into an immensely catchy declaration of self-awareness. I love a good reluctant party song, and “What If” captures that spirit beautifully. A duo I hope pops up on my SXSW radar this year, so I can check them out live.
Sunday, Feb. 4
Middlespoon
@ Austin Eastciders Collaboratory (979 Springdale Road Ste. 130) – 3 p.m.
Pregame in style at Austin Eastciders’ brand new taproom whilst serenaded by Middlespoon. This Euro-house-inspired duo has made a quick name for themselves with tight production, clever lyrics, and infectious groove. “House Wife” is a tongue-in-cheek song about male chauvinism and obsolete gender roles, while “LightningBug” is a straight up be-my-girl jam in the style of Jamiroquai and my beloved CAPYAC. Sip cider, move your feet, and sachet your way into Super Bowl Sunday.
