Welcome to the weekend, Austin! Our beautiful city is a hotbed of things to do, see, eat, drink, and listen to. This weekend, we recommend a double dose of entrancing electro-pop and a legendary local hip hop duo’s festival of empowerment and unity. Enjoy the weekend, faithful readers. And as always, listen local!
Friday, August 24
Emme video release w/Scenery
@ Cheer Up Charlies (900 Red River) – 9 p.m. – Facebook event
Subtle and sweet, like breeze through an open window, Emme’s sparkling electro-chill evokes images and memories, with spot-on production and mellow soundscapes. On Friday, the duo celebrates the release of a brand new video for the sensational single, “Collapse.”
Like listening through a kaleidoscope, the song’s feathery vocals and minimalist backbeats create an enchanting melange of dreams and mental magic. The accompanying video, full of slice of life moments punctuated with off-kilter imagery, is a lovely companion piece to an already wonderful tune. Treat yourself and check out this two-some on Friday.
Also playing: synth-pop act Scenery.
Dossey w/SIGNY, Wonderbitch, Palm Daze
@ Empire Control Room (606 E. 7th St.) – 9 p.m. – Tickets
Tightly tuned electro-pop sung with grace, poise, and emotion to spare, Dossey is an artist of depth, passion and genuine fun. Songs like “Electric” jump with big percussive slams and soaring synth wrapped in jumping time signatures, while “Heartbeats” showcases Dossey’s energetic, expressive vocals across a hella-fun pop jam.
Even her cover of Peter Gabriel’s heartbreaking “In Your Eyes” adds flavor and personal depth to a well-worn classic. Another artist guaranteed to be in my rotation this week. Also playing: fellow electro-pop all stars SIGNY, electro-indie act Wonderbitch, and psychedelic dream pop band Palm Daze.

RAS Day 2018 feat. Riders Against the Storm, Trouble in the Streets, more
@ Kenny Dorham’s Backyard (1106 E. 11th) – 3 to 11 p.m. – Facebook event
With respect to every band playing this weekend, when RAS Day comes around, I have to give the event special love. Organized by legends of ATX hip hop Riders Against the Storm, RAS Day is a celebration of music, culture, and wellness.
While most of the lineup consists of MC’s and artists from outside the area, the incredible hip hop/rock sound of Trouble in the Streets will ensure Austin music is well represented. Add to the mix local artisans, great food trucks, and a heart for unity that will reverberate for miles, and you have a festival that’s uniquely ATX.
