Crux Climbing Center Opens Multi-Purpose Space off South Congress

Off of South Congress stands the massive, angular structure of Crux Climbing Center, the newest bouldering and rope gym to inspire Austin residents to place hand on rock. The 22,000 square foot facility opened on May 7, 2016 with a huge competition, Setter Showdown, that drew hundreds of climbers from around the United States.

Local climbers Matt Twyman and Kevin Goradia partnered with East Austin architecture firm Derrington Building Studio to create a space that is incredibly unique to athletes, yogis and those searching for a gym with a comfortable but modern aesthetic.

“Ultimately, our vision is to make it a home. Climbing is very community-centric, and people just want to have a place to go gather and hang out. Climbing is almost like a second part of it. You spend more time hanging out with friends. We wanted a place where people enjoy being that is comfy and clean as they climb, read, do yoga and whatever else,” shared Twyman.

The Broken Spoke: Austin’s Texas Dancehall Time Machine

May 2, 2016 by Bill Tucker 1 Comment

The Broken Spoke Austin

Welcome to the world famous Broken Spoke (Credit: Christopher Rose via Flickr CC)

The Broken Spoke isn’t just a venue. It’s a symbol of Texan defiance. You won’t take the Alamo without a fight and The Broken Spoke will never change. Even as South Lamar explodes skyward with apartment complexes and hotels, one of the most famous dancehalls in Texas remains intact. A genuine relic of Lone Star uniqueness.

In the course of a four-hour visit, I not only got a chance to breathe in everything this storied establishment has to offer, but I learned why it has endured over 50 years. Underneath the weathered bar neon and aging exterior lies a musical history and sense of family that are unlike anything else Austin has to offer. [Read more…]

24 Hours in South Austin

December 16, 2015 by Jessica Pino 1 Comment

24 Hours in South Austin

If you only had 24 hours in Austin, what would you do? This is a loaded question for such a fabulous town. And the answer depends on so many things, like what part of town you’re in, what you like, how old you are and your budget.

When creating this “ultimate itinerary,” I decided to use all 24 hours. Because…why not? I also decided to focus the itinerary in South Austin, to get the most out of those 24 hours by avoiding traffic situations. You can do most of this itinerary on foot or by bike. You can also do it any time of year.

So here it is. The best 24 hours of your life…in South Austin. [Read more…]

SHED Barbershop Gives Classic Service in Modern Setting

September 24, 2015 by Andrew Chase 1 Comment

SHED Barbershop

Andrew Chase Needs a Haircut

Think it might be time for a trim?

In case you haven’t seen me lately (or ever), I’m about 16 months deep into growing my hair out, which has increasingly become a pointless and comical experiment gone wrong. You know when your hair gets longer and goes through “awkward stages”? Well, it has pretty much been awkward every step of the way for me.

When my hair isn’t down/taking the shape of Darth Vader’s helmet, I’ll often put it up in what’s known as a “man bun.” Or, in my case, “thousands of frizzy hair strands stretching outward as if to literally run away from the devastation that is my head.” My own mother makes fun of me.

Anyway, you get the point. Luckily for me and everyone around me, I got word of this place in Austin called SHED Barbershop and decided to book an appointment. I thought I was going in to get a haircut, but what I actually got was an unbelievably fun night at one of the hippest joints in town. Don’t worry; I got the haircut, too. [Read more…]

Gully Cat Tattoo: Inking Austin Since 2003

August 5, 2015 by Mathis Kennington Leave a Comment

Gully Cat Tattoo Door Sign

Gully Cat Tattoo, located at 2006 South 1st Street in Austin

Austin is the nation’s hub for individual expression and creativity. We don’t erase graffiti; we make landmarks and t-shirts out of it. We listen to passionate local music. We eat food with personality. We drink beer with soul.

We love creative expression so much, we even wear it on our skin. Live here long enough, and you’ll forget until you go out of town that Austin tattoos are as common as Austin breakfast tacos.

Gully Cat Tattoo has accommodated Austin’s lust for creative expression for 14 years and Mike Terrell–shop owner and Austin native–has been a tattoo artist for nearly two decades. His little shop is just what you’d hope to find on South 1st: a colorful old home turned into a business. This local business adds to the funky vibe that makes South Austin what it is. [Read more…]
