Austin Non-Profit Teaches Old School DJ Skills With New Spin

February 10, 2015 by Adrienne Albregts Leave a Comment

Dub Academy DJ School Classroom

Not so traditional classroom at Austin’s non-profit DJ school, Dub Academy

We all know someone who’s brilliant, but hasn’t reached his or her full potential. Blame boredom, right? Well, in Austin there’s a non-traditional learning environment that’s anything but boring.

Wicka Wicka What?

Dub Academy is a non-profit organization that teaches the electronic arts, specifically DJing and music production. It has been igniting creativity in many Austin-area children and young adults who may have otherwise fallen through cracks.

Just check out some of the amazing skills students learn in the video below of Dub Academy instructor Buck Rodgers:

Fun Fact: “Dub” is a Jamaican term used to describe a genre of music that originated from reggae and remixes of existing songs.

Dub Academy is organized by a network of professional, local DJs and music producers who you can see at hot spots all over town, such as Plush, Red 7 and V Nightclub. Other than creating a space for young people to learn electronic arts, the instructors at Dub Academy encourage students to network with each other for future job opportunities, such as DJing at:

  • Weddings
  • Private events
  • Local fundraisers
  • Clubs around town

Price of Admission

Classes at Dub Academy range from $395 for DJing 101 to $2,275 for a full producer package of courses. Clearly, financial constraints can be an issue. So this year, Dub Academy is collecting donations in hopes of sending 500 underprivileged Austin-area children to DJ school. These students will take courses after regular school hours, during the summer or on weekends.

Additionally, Dub Academy offers financial assistance to those who meet certain qualifications. For more information on financial aid, call the Dub Academy office at (512) 600-2144.

Anyone can get involved by sponsoring a student or volunteering. In return for their time and effort, volunteers receive free admission at some of the coolest shows in Austin. You can help out by hosting a fundraiser, contributing to Dub Academy’s social media efforts or pounding the streets during festivals to spread the word about Dub Academy.

Recording Studio Rental and Extra Services

Once you learn how to produce music at Dub Academy, you can rent the studio to record your masterpieces. The space is available to local musicians, songwriters and vocalists who do not have regular access to recording equipment.

Rates are hourly and include the option to utilize an in-house sound engineer. Discounts on studio time apply for those who purchase four- or eight-hour time blocks. You can also have a professional music engineer evaluate your tracks, and/or convert your vinyl into high-resolution digital format. There’s something for everyone from the ambitious apprentice to the seasoned producer.
