The Broken Spoke isn’t just a venue. It’s a symbol of Texan defiance. You won’t take the Alamo without a fight and The Broken Spoke will never change. Even as South Lamar explodes skyward with apartment complexes and hotels, one of the most famous dancehalls in Texas remains intact. A genuine relic of Lone Star uniqueness.

In the course of a four-hour visit, I not only got a chance to breathe in everything this storied establishment has to offer, but I learned why it has endured over 50 years. On April 15, 2016, Calliope Musicals celebrated the long-awaited release of their debut LP, “Time Owes You Nothing,” with an elaborate party at Central Presbyterian Church. There were blow-up animals center stage, dancers, happy faces and crowd cheers surrounding this already active band. After finishing their sixth tour and receiving “Best New Austin Artist” at Austin Music Awards in March, Calliope Musicals seemed grateful to announce their songs are now ready for fans to take home.

Now in its fifth year, WEST (West Austin Studio Tour) takes place over two weekends in May. Participants are encouraged to seek out remarkable works of art during this free, self-guided tour.

Voyager Nights Stimulate Growth of Experimental Music in Austin

On June 13, 2015, the first VoyagerFest commenced in the cozy West Austin backyard of The Rusty Mule. A good number of the bands that performed were based in progressive rock and its many subgenres, but the festival also showcased avant garde, electronic (intelligent dance music), and other acts with experimental and innovative properties.

Beginning on Jan. 24, 2016, VoyagerFest launched a concert series called Voyager Nights, a place for bands from the previous year’s festival to continue performing and spreading awareness for the second annual event. Last month, VoyagerFest was approved as a 501(c) (3) organization, having officially established the mission to promote and support experimental music and art.

But that’s where I found myself, chatting with the members of Duncan Fellows before their Feb. 23 show at The Parish. Their demeanor was quiet and unassuming, much like their blend of emotional, harmony-driven gaze rock.

But don’t mistake these indie upstarts for boring. With a repertoire of well-crafted tunes about love, loss and longing, Duncan Fellows impresses with their range and simple power. Shorthand, it’s “SXSW,” but Austin’s incredible 30-year-old celebration is fully titled “SXSW Music, Film and Interactive Conferences and Festivals.” If movies and music are the only festival images you mentally conjure, you’ve missed out on perhaps the richest and most diverse component: SXSW Interactive.
