How to Experience the Real Dry Creek Cafe, Austin Treasure Since 1953

December 12, 2016 by Ashley Alkek Leave a Comment

Dry Creek Cafe in Austin

Welcome to Dry Creek Cafe

Have you ever walked into a bar and felt like you knew everyone in the place? In Texas-style homage to the beloved television show “Cheers,” I happily introduce Dry Creek Cafe & Boat Dock.

This cozy oasis in the hills of Austin was built in 1953 with nothing around but some houses, the creek below and Mount Bonnell right up the road. The rich history of the place was just beginning when owner Buddy Reynolds bought Dry Creek Cafe from his mother in 1984, roughly the same time Texas changed the drinking age from 18 to 21. It was important to Reynolds to keep it running, as he spent most of his childhood helping his mother, Sarah, create this special place for the community. Sarah is a legend at Dry Creek Cafe, operating the bar until she was in her 90’s. If you’re lucky, you’ll hear a sassy “Sarah” story now and then from behind the bar.

If you’re new, here’s how to have the ultimate time at Dry Creek Cafe. [Read more…]

For some people, karaoke is a time to sit back and marvel at (or laugh along with) vocally talented friends. For others, it’s a dream scenario come to life to hold a mic and squeeze every note out of a favorite song. Austin has a happenin’ karaoke scene. Even better, the community of karaoke-ers is usually very welcoming, no matter whether you sound like Adele or Tom Waits with a cold.

Karaoke is a perfect outlet to shake off stress built up during the week. Here are a few of Austin’s favorite spots to let loose with a microphone. [Read more…]

Cuban Sandwich Cafe Sign Austin

We live in an exciting time. For one thing, Austinites can now jump on a flight to Havana, Cuba any time of the year. What better way to prepare your taste buds than to try authentic dishes from the best Cuban restaurants here in Austin?

For a moment, imagine yourself on this beautiful island, located between the Caribbean Sea, Mexican Gulf and Atlantic Ocean. 1950’s-era cars are rolling past the rows of pastel-colored houses and salsa music can be heard from every corner. No, I haven’t been, but this is what my imagination creates when I think of the essence of Cuba. Until that adventure happens, we’re all lucky enough to have “day trip” options when it comes to Cuban cuisine in Austin! [Read more…]

Did you know Austin has a zoo? If you didn’t, you’re not alone! It isn’t your typical zoo, as it started as a rescue sanctuary in 1990 and remains a non-profit habitat for rescued animals today. The nature-loving individuals who work there are dedicated to rehabilitation and education.

If you fancy a day spent with amazing creatures other than humans, it’s worth the 25-30 minute drive southwest from downtown Austin. Here are a few key components that make it such a special place. [Read more…]
