Where is Pemberton Heights Located
Pemberton Heights is a neighborhood of Austin, Texas, and part of the Old West Austin Historic District. The area is bounded by Northwood Road on the north, Lamar Boulevard/Shoal Creek on the east, 24th Street/Windsor Road on the south, and Texas State Highway Loop 1 on the west.
What To Expect
When it comes to holiday lights, Pemberton Heights offers some impressive displays. You’ll find beautifully decorated homes throughout the neighborhood, with houses adorned in everything from traditional white lights to vibrant, colorful displays.
If you’re driving in from north-bound or south-bound Mopac (Loop 1), the best route to take is to start on Northwood Road, make a right turn onto Woodbridge Road, and zig-zag through the streets. Pemberton Heights encompasses Northwood Road, Westover Road, Gaston Avenue, and Ethridge Avenue, offering several streets to meander through. (If you’re coming from North Lamar Boulevard, we recommend starting on W 29th Street, where you can enter the neighborhood by taking a left onto Woodbridge Road and driving through each of the neighborhood’s streets from there.)
Since Pemberton Heights is a large neighborhood, it’s recommended to drive rather than walk through the streets. In total, it will take about 30 minutes to drive through the entire community.
Since this is a residential neighborhood of decorated houses, rather than an organized event, people are welcome to simply drive through the neighborhood at any time. Additionally, while many houses are decorated, some are not. It varies year to year how many residents decide to decorate their homes, but there are usually at least a dozen houses or so that are decked out in true holiday style.
The Best Time to See the Christmas Lights
The closer to Christmas, the more holiday lights there are to see. People usually start decorating their homes at the beginning of December, but we recommend waiting until the middle of the month (around December 15 or so) to go see the Pemberton Heights neighborhood lights.
This is a one-holiday activity in Austin that doesn’t have big crowds or long lines, so you can expect a smooth and seamless ride as you cruise by the festively-lit homes. The sun sets around 5:30 this time of the year in Austin, so our only recommendation is to wait until after sunset to get the full effect of the stunning displays.
Pemberton Heights’ Christmas lights are a must-see for any family looking to make some merry holiday memories in Austin. So bundle up, grab some hot cocoa, put on some holiday tunes, and enjoy an evening driving through one of Austin’s most charming and historic neighborhoods.
