6 Austin Butcher Shops Preparing Meat the Old-fashioned Way

February 20, 2018 by Bill Tucker 1 Comment

Austin Butcher Shops

Angelo the butcher looked like something from a horror movie. He had a weathered face, one eye, and wore a bloody apron. Everywhere he went, he had a butcher’s knife in hand. The man never smiled. To a 12-year-old boy in northern New Jersey, he was terrifying. He was also a culinary surgeon. Grunting and scowling, he’d whack up meat like a pianist tickles the ivories. Some of my fondest memories involve watching Angelo work his magic, while I waited for the deli guy to slice my cold cuts.

Butchering meat isn’t just a trade. It’s an art form. Proper meat preparation can turn a good meal legendary, and these six Austin butchers are carrying on the craft in fine style. Next time you need to cook up some ribs, grill a burger, or perfectly roast a filet mignon, skip the mega mart and swing by these local Austin butcher shops for premium cuts. [Read more…]

Sawagani River crab at Fukumoto Sushi Austin

Sawagani River crab is one of the most popular menu items at Fukumoto Sushi & Yakitori Izakaya

When you think about Austin’s dining options, my guess is traditional Japanese isn’t the first that comes to mind. I get it. This is the city of barbecue and tacos. But if you’re looking for an authentic, adventurous, casual-yet-traditional, and entirely memorable dining experience, I have the place for you: east Austin’s Fukumoto Sushi & Yakitori Izakaya.

Yes, you read the title correctly. I am indeed talking about bootlegging during the Prohibition. The Original Hoffbrau opened its doors in 1932, a year before Prohibition came to an end. Brothers Robert “Coleman” and Tom Hamby put in $125 each to buy the property now located in one of the most coveted parts of town: West Sixth Street. Now in its 83rd year with the fourth generation of family ownership, The Original Hoffbrau has become an iconic Austin steakhouse.

Austin Eastciders Expands Beyond Austin With Tasty Cider, Spirit of Giving

Austin Eastciders Taproom

Outside Austin Eastciders’ taproom

Don’t look now, but bars across America are being invaded by Austin’s own. Tito’s Handmade Vodka is king of cocktails and PBR has been ousted by Shiner as the hip beer of choice. (Shiner isn’t quite Austin, but it’s close enough.) Now we can add Austin Eastciders to the list.

In the span of four years, Austin Eastciders has grown from a humble cidery on Springdale Road to a nationally-recognized brand with two locations, distributing to over a dozen states. Not bad for a small town operation with giant dreams.

Not knowing much about Peruvian cuisine, I had to research to discover what it’s all about. I learned that Peruvian cooking combines elements from many cultures and ethnicities found in Peru: African, Chinese, Japanese, and Spanish, to name a few. This unique blend of flavors has made its way to east Austin thanks to Yuyo, the newest concept from El Chile Group. The menu is diverse and you won’t feel intimated, even if it’s your first time trying Peruvian cuisine. Check out some of the highlights from my recent visit!
