Coffee and beer have to be the top two beverages Austin survives on. It’s easy to find either–and often both–at cafes and breweries all over the city. The newest member of the coffee-beer-hybrid is Cosmic Coffee + Beer Garden off South Congress near Ben White.

Cosmic isn’t an ordinary coffee shop or beer garden, but the culmination of co-founder Paul Oveisi’s passions: live entertainment, sustainability, beer, coffee, and food. I had a chance to sit down with the entrepreneur for a chat about the interesting history behind Cosmic Coffee + Beer Garden. This fascinating story is full of surprises. Whether you want to sip a socially acceptable cocktail with breakfast or nurse a brooding hangover, the Bloody Mary has become the standard go-to. So whether you’re looking for the classic version, a peacock of garnishes, or something more exotic, here’s our guide to the best Bloody Marys in Austin. [Read more…]

Vintage Heart Cafe Austin

Enjoy a cup of joe, hot or cold, indoors or out, at Vintage Heart Cafe

Vintage Heart Cafe has become many things to me. It’s where I can count on a delicious caffeine boost or find my productive side. On my less focused days, it’s a comfortable place to continue my quest to traverse the Internet’s outer limits. Recently, Vintage House Cafe has become something more to me and the Austin community at-large. It now includes a beautiful outdoor space, food options, and adult beverages.

Family and Interior Mexican Cuisine Are Heart and Soul of Licha’s Cantina

January 12, 2018 by Amanda Sayers Leave a Comment

Licha's Cantina Mexican in East Austin

Licha’s Cantina’s colorful exterior welcomes you to the heart of East Sixth Street

I tend to be drawn to people and places that radiate a positive energy. Add delicious food to that, and I’m a loyal and devoted regular.

When you first walk into the old bungalow that is Licha’s Cantina, you don’t feel like you’re in a restaurant at all. You feel as though you’re in someone’s home. The interior is cozy and dimly lit, and there’s music playing in the background. There is heart and soul, and the energy makes you feel good.

Somehow you know you’re about to sit down to a delicious and comforting meal, like you’re at a family dinner. [Read more…]

Puli-Ra Merges Indian Flavors With Texas Produce at The Yard

December 27, 2017 by Irvianne Torremoro Leave a Comment

Puli-Ra Austin

Deepa Shirdhar and the Puli-Ra team can be found in the courtyard at Still Austin Whiskey Co.

Editor’s Note: In January 2018, Puli-Ra relocated to Texas Keeper Cider. Puli-Ra’s last day there was Nov. 11, 2018. Chef Shirdhar is looking to return to pop-up supper clubs, with a potential storefront coming.

You may have heard of Puli-Ra’s earlier iterations, Anjore Supper Club and farmers’ market darling ChaiWalla. Both have taken the backseat since Puli-Ra moved into Still Austin Whiskey Co.’s courtyard, as the distillery’s official food truck.

The team members behind Puli-Ra are a hardworking bunch, dedicated to merging South Indian flavors with local Texas produce that will astound your taste buds right off the bat. [Read more…]

Hidden in Plain Slice: 5 Secret Menu Items to Ask for in Austin

December 26, 2017 by Jackson Prince 1 Comment

Secret Menu Items in Austin, Texas

It’s no secret Austin has one of the nation’s most vibrant and experimental food scenes. An army of unique food trucks (Wunder Pig Barbecue Co., Granny’s Tacos, Hey Cupcake!); vegan ice cream (Sweet Ritual); and fully dine-able movie theatres (Alamo Drafthouse, Violet Crown) are just a few signature elements.

However, unbeknownst to many, Austin boasts one of the most delectable secret food scenes, as well. Restaurants like Chuy’s, Frigid Frog, and Olamaie all feature legitimate, buyable food items that, whether it’s to boost mystique or keep chefs from drowning in a kitchen of their own complex creations, never make it to print.

It’s my job today to guide any and all curious Austinites through some of my favorite secret menu items in this city’s confidential cartes du jour. [Read more…]
