The gate drops and 24 twin-engine motorcycles leap forward in screaming unison. The elbow-to-elbow pack surges, speeding ahead on the flat track at more than 100 miles per hour. In seconds, they’ve reached the first turn; riders lean sharply in a horse-powered ballet. As one steel-toed booted foot skims the packed soil, each jockeys for position.
The crowd roars, thirsty for more.

Since 2014, ESPN X Games and Austin have been a committed couple. But every relationship, no matter how sweet, eventually comes to an end, and so ESPN recently announced its search for a new 2017–2018 host city. While X Games Vice President Tim Reed said he “wouldn’t rule out” a return, he stated that a later summer date would mean the Austin venue was just too darn hot for spectators and athletes.
As a final farewell, X Games has made a few additions and subtractions, changes designed to leave athletes and Austin’s action sports fans separating on the best of terms. [Read more…]

The Buzz Mill on East Riverside has been serving caffeine and booze for the past three years, enticing customers with its lumberjack decor, live music, a spacious outdoor patio space and delicious in-house eats. I particularly enjoy grabbing a brunch plate of chicken and waffles paired with grapefruit mimosas and a large group of friends.
Now, the crew behind The Buzz Mill is expanding operations with Grizzly Hall, their debut music and event venue. Showcasing music and comedy shows, art exhibitions, film events, and beyond, the space is poised to become a popular nightlife option.

Post-jazz-rock is a progressive genre taking on a life of its own. After the loud riffs and swirling licks of tall and augmented chords level out, there’s room for a wider canvas. Austin band Every Shape a Diamond adds flare to this mix by incorporating the laptop for an avant garde feel. On May 7, 2016, the group held their official, self-titled album release party at Breakaway Records, and now audiences can own this string of progressive songs on vinyl and CD.
“Progressive music deals with complexity,” drummer David Pavkovic explained. “It’s music that makes my brain happy from processing the information.” [Read more…]
Entire wall of handmade ornaments from Austin Weird Homes Tour 2016
On May 7, 2016, 11 Austin homeowners opened their doors for Weird Homes Tour visitors. Tour-goers wandered through curious dwellings full of art, thoughtful design and decorative oddities. In its third year, Weird Homes Tour donated a portion of proceeds to Foundation Communities, a local nonprofit that provides affordable housing.

If there’s a greater feeling than drinking cold lemonade on a hot day, maybe it’s drinking cold lemonade that has been crafted by the tiny hands we all love.
Picture this. You’re walking through Pease Park, reminiscing about last weekend’s birthday bash for Eeyore, when you spot three children behind a lemonade stand. One in a Spider-Man costume, one in a Wonder Woman costume and one in a Hulk costume. As you order a glass of their homemade lemonade, you realize you’ve just met three of Austin’s youngest entrepreneurs.
