There’s nothing better than a three-day weekend and this Memorial Day is no exception. Before we get to the picks, we’d like to recognize the thousands of brave men and women who gave their lives while serving our country in the armed forces. A thousand thank you’s to you and your loved ones, for your sacrifice in protection of our freedoms and liberties.
As we honor our heroes local and abroad, we have a wonderful weekend of live music to explore. This time around, we showcase a local soul diva and a two-day festival celebrating creatives, and the magic they make. Get out in the open, invade the city, and listen local!

Ms. Mack & The Daddies
@ Skylark (2039 Airport Blvd.) – 9 p.m. – Event page
For years, I’ve been remiss in not giving the smashing and sensational Ms. Mack some love on this weekly series. Time to rectify this egregious omission. An artist of power, beauty, and pure soul swagger, Ms. Mack and The Daddies have been rocking Skylark for what feels like years, to the delight of discerning local music fans.
Whether she’s smoking James Brown classics like “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” or singing D’Angelo’s “Brown Sugar” through an Etta James filter, Ms. Mack takes covers and converts them into originals. A worthy night out regardless of your musical taste.

Nomadx Austin
@ Empire Garage and Control Room (606 E. 7th St.) – All day – Tickets
A celebration of creatives, community, and collaboration, this year’s Nomadx Austin festival brings together some of our finest local music to champion a great cause.
The Saturday session features ATX stalwarts like shoegaze legends Moving Panoramas, alternative rockers Chill Russell, the lush psych rock sound of Kalu & the Electric Joint, and metal maniacs Megafauna (who are also celebrating a new LP, “Ghost Coast”).
An incredible day of music with a heart towards the creative talent that makes our city tick.

Nomadx Austin – Day 2
@ Empire Garage and Control Room (606 E. 7th St.) – All day – Tickets
You may call it cheating. I call it loving the lineup! Day two of Nomadx continues Saturday’s trend of excellence with performances by funk/rock masters Mamahawk, experimental electro-pop act The Octopus Project, the afro-Latin sound of Atash, and one-man magician Mobley.
Add to the lineup industry panels, wellness session, and creative workshops, and you have a weekend brimming with energy and imagination.
