Stuck in the middle of 100 degree days, knocking on the door of August, it’s hard to separate from Netflix-binging and air conditioning. But this is Texas, y’all. We’re made of sterner stuff.
This weekend, we’ve picked can’t miss soul/funk, a female-focused rock/country show, and classic country Waylon would respect. Get outside, weather the heat, and–as always–listen local.
Friday, July 21
Music Under the Star w/Tameca Jones and Los Coast
@ Bullock Texas State History Museum (1800 Congress Ave.) – 6-9 p.m. – Free
R&B soul queen, Tameca Jones, and masters of the soul/funk/world groove, Los Coast, play this Friday at the Bullock Texas State History Museum. Tameca Jones’ sultry, smoky “Sandman” is pure R&B honey, while Los Coast’s “Simplify” is an eruption of horn lines, funk drums, and shout-to-the-ceiling vocals. Expect a body-shaking exhibition of hyper-fun Austin music.
Saturday, July 22
Julie Nolen and The Bluebonnets
@ One-2-One Bar (1509 S. Lamar Blvd.) – 9:30 p.m. – Tickets
One’s a tough-as-nails country growler, the other an all-female garage rock band. While it doesn’t sound like the two would complement each other, they each play in-your-face, aggressive styles of their respective genres. Nolen’s songs are scored with sandpaper as they pulse with defiance and snarl. The Bluebonnets, on the other hand, are a blustery, badass fem-rock group with chops to spare. A worthwhile way to rock out your Saturday night.
Sunday, July 23
Silo Road
@ ABGB (1305 W. Oltorf St.) – 4 p.m. – Free
Old school honky tonk is the name of the game for the ATX country crooners of Silo Road. Staples at local venues like The White Horse and The Continental, this down home foursome delivers authentic country in a city desperate for less bang and more twang. Grab a pint and start Sunday Funday right!
