Christmas Day is almost here! While most of the city gears up for travel, presents, and the lingering threat of snow, Austin’s live music scene refuses to take a weekend off. This weekend, we recommend a rootsy Americana showcase, intricate indie rock, and a rebel rock guitar legend. Enjoy the weekend, enjoy the holidays and–as always–listen local!
Friday, Dec. 22
Noble Dog Reunion Show w/Western Youth (Rooney Pitchfork Band, Jackie Venson, The Dave Scher Trio earlier in day)
@ One-2-One Bar (1509 S. Lamar Blvd.) | 10:30 p.m. | Tickets
With a lineup full of roots rock, Americana, and old-fashioned blues, fans of classic Austin music can’t go wrong this Friday at One-2-One. Headliner Noble Dog brings a soulful strut to traditional southern rock, while Western Youth’s alt country sound bumps with energy, mean guitar licks, and bravado. Earlier at 7:30 p.m. the incomparable guitar virtuoso Jackie Venson will be playing with The Dave Scher Trio (separate ticketed event). An exceptional evening of rootsy rock and guitar-driven soul.

Cross Record
@ Radio Coffee and Beer (4204 Manchaca Road) | 9 p.m. | Info
With a sound that’s a mix of The XX and Trent Reznor guitar fuzz, Cross Record is fantastic and fascinating. “High Rise” off latest record “Wabi-Sabi” slips from breathy minimalism to the pounding drums of impending doom. “Steady Waves” from the same album swells from the sonic fragility of butterfly wings to growling guitar and soaring two-part harmonies. I adore quiet/loud indie rock and this exceptional two-some scratches that itch. Candlelight show with surprise guest.
Sunday, Dec. 24 (Christmas Eve)
Armadillo Christmas Bazaar w/Bill Kirchen, Durawa, Albert & Gage
@ Palmer Events Center (900 Barton Springs Road) | 12-8 p.m. | Info
Feeling guilty about leaving your Christmas shopping to the last minute? Tell your friends you’re going to a Bill Kirchen show and you’ll be spared the embarrassment! With a rebel’s growl and rockabilly strum, Bill Kirchen is an American guitar legend. While he cemented his legacy all around the country with Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen (how’s that for a band name), he currently calls Austin home, hence his inclusion on this list. Close out the holiday season with blistering southern rock and to-the-wire shopping!
