Just a few hours from now, we’ll be able to break free from our work week bonds and escape into three days of live music. This time around, we bring you a psychedelic two-pack, a local legend’s release party, and horror pop blues. Enjoy the weekend, and–as always–listen local in Austin!
Friday, August 25
The Mammoths w/Otis the Destroyer
@ Stubb’s (801 Red River) – Doors 10 p.m. – $6
A double-punch of trippy, swooning rock and roll, The Mammoths teams up with Otis the Destroyer for an evening of mind-expanding awesomeness. The Mammoths’ inaugural EP, “Golden Spell,” is a texture-laden groove bomb that effortlessly swings from fuzzy psychedelic to Black Keys garage rock in the space of a song. Combined with the tight rhythms and head trip harmonies of Otis the Destroyer, and you have a sensational way to spend a weekend.
Saturday, August 26
A Giant Dog (album release show) w/Harlem and Big Bill
@ Hotel Vegas (1502 E. 6th St.) – 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. – $10+
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I’m a huge Sabrina Ellis fan. Both Sweet Spirit and A Giant Dog feel like members of the same twisted family. A musical “Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” if you will. The elder member of the band clan celebrates the release of a new record, “Toy,” with a night of blustery, energetic rock and roll. Expect to hear Ellis’ signature wail atop a needle bed of grinding guitar and devil drums. Pure musical bliss. Also playing are Texas born hard rockers, Harlem, and ATX garage rock new wavers, Big Bill.
Sunday, August 27
Churchwood
@ Antone’s Record Shop (2928 Guadalupe St. #101) – 3-4 p.m.
Close out your weekend with a touch of the odd and insane. A swirling mélange of horror pop, psychobilly, and end times blues, Churchwood is a sun blast of experimental musicality. Unlike other acts who build themselves around theatrics and little else, Churchwood has genuine blues chops bolstering the screaming guitars and lead singer Joe Doerr’s snarling vocals. A show that’ll linger in your ears throughout the week ahead.
