Weary from a week full of conference calls, e-mail chains, and horrid, evil “working lunch?” Blow off some steam this week by digging live music! This time around, we recommend a local pop star, 80’s-era garage rock, and an extraordinary soul band that’s legendary in the Austin music scene. A full plate of eclectic goodness, courtesy of your friends at The Austinot. As always, listen local!
Friday, August 11
Kady Rain, The Ghost Wolves, Danny Malone
@ The Blackheart (86 Rainey St.) – 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.
As bi-polar a bill you can possibly ask for, Blackheart plays host to pop act, Kady Rain, and CBGB-era punk rock duo, The Ghost Wolves. I’m not ashamed to say I love a good pop song, and Kady Rain delivers in every way. Songs like “R.A.D. Moves” combines Katy Perry’s Californian summer bounce with Kylie Minogue vocal chops, while “The City” presents a somber and emotional portrait of long lost love. The Ghost Wolves, on the other hand, lights stages afire with a playfully aggressive brand of Ramones-style 80’s garage punk. An exceptional show to check out.
Saturday, August 12
Tomar & the FC’s
@ The Continental Club (1315 S. Congress Ave.) – 10:30 p.m. – $10 door
A winner of the prestigious “Biggest Life of the Party” honor in my SXSW 2017 Superlative Awards, Tomar & the FC’s will be the most fun you have all weekend. A tour-de-force of soul power and perpetual groove, this dynamite group will leave you breathless. Personal favorites include the slow burn swoon and swing of “You’re Not Alone,” and the James Brown scream and shout of “Foot Down.” A band that simply can’t be missed.
Sunday, August 13
The Wagoneers
@ C-Boy’s Heart & Soul (2008 S. Congress Ave.) – 7:30 p.m. – $10 door
Close out your weekend with Texas Music Hall of Fame inductee, The Wagoneers. Traditional country with a bluesy, southern rock edge, these masters of genre have been filling dance halls since the 1980’s. Listening to bands like The Wagoneers is like reconnecting with your Austin roots, even if you’ve only been here a year or two.
And to maximize your Sunday Funday, come early for Chicken S#!+ Bingo with Dale Watson, then stick around after The Wagoneers for soulful, alternative county from C-Boys staple, Hilary York. Remember, you can always call in sick on Monday!
