After grey skies and dreary weather, this weekend is shaping up to be 75 degrees and lovely. As a result, we’re focusing on Austin bands participating in outdoor fun this weekend. From a Friday night brewery show to two Saturday festivals, there’s lots of local to listen to in Austin in the upcoming days. Enjoy!
Friday, April 21
MCG
@ Oskar Blues Brewery (10420 Metric Blvd.)
Start your weekend off with booze and tunes, courtesy of Austin indie rockers, MCG. Lead singer Mariclaire Gamble’s soulful vocals and sharp lyrics swim in a sea of stick-in-your-head pop/rock, creating a sound that’s fun, lively, and impossible to resist. Blend that with a couple Oskar Blues brews, and you have a fine Friday night.
Saturday, April 22
Sunny Sweeny
@ Smithville Jamboree (107 Hwy 71 W, Smithville, TX)
If you’re looking for a day trip, take Highway 71 east to Bastrop County for the Smithville Jamboree, an old-fashioned neighborhood carnival with games, contests, and live music. Local artist Sunny Sweeny closes out Saturday’s festivities with her blend of classic country and southern rock growl. Lyrics dripping with lived-in honesty, Sweeny’s music is as thoughtful as it is catchy. A boot-stompin’ way to spend a Saturday in Central Texas.
Texas Community Music Festival w/Cilantro Boom Box, Skip Monday, Long Star Swing Syndicate, Paige & Anna, more
@ Central Market North Lamar (4001 N. Lamar Blvd.)
If taking a trek to Smithville seems a bit much, Central Market on North Lamar is hosting an amazing festival of local music. Cilantro Boombox’s upbeat Latin/funk fusion headlines a fantastic, varied lineup of Austin artists. Also playing are folk two-some Skip Monday, big band Lone Star Swing Syndicate, the easy breezy guitar pop of Paige and Ahnna, along with a variety of other local groups and ensembles.
