For Miguel Ojeda, John Zakoor and Bryan O’Flynn, the band name Migrant Kids represents not only a group of musicians, but the embodiment of a lifestyle. I had the chance to sit down with the band and learn a bit more about their music and background.

Austin has a lot of nicknames: ATX, Bat City, the Violet Crown, Liberal City of Texas, Hippie Haven. But the nickname that rings true to everyone who calls Austin home is the Live Music Capital of the World. Not Texas, not the U.S., but the entire world! It goes without saying that choosing only five up and coming Austin musicians to watch is quite difficult.

I don’t typically like using standard musical genres to describe music because musicians are often so much more dynamic than one label describes. But for the sake of this article, I try to cover a variety of genres.

And I’m not saying these five are the ONLY bands to watch. They’re simply in my top five at the moment. If I see any of them scheduled to play a show, I make it a point to go watch. And I hope you will, too.

Which bands did you check out last weekend? Maybe you caught a soulful blues set at Saxon Pub. Dug a few cover bands on Dirty 6th. Rocked out to a bluegrass/hardcore mashup at Empire Garage.

Me? I saw a circus funk/rock seven piece with performance artists, a rapper dressed like a cast member from Super Troopers and at least one band member jumping on a trampoline.

With a career that began with her 15-year old self riffing a guitar at a skatepark in a band named Twelve Blades, Lauren Langer Larson has fashioned more guitar licks on her belt than most. Whether or not she joined Twelve Blades to impress the skater boys is yet to be determined (and the one joke of this article).
