Austin Music Foundation Empowers Local Artists

October 30, 2015 by Mathis Kennington 1 Comment

Austin Music Foundation Office

Though the typical Austinite may never see it, there is much more to Austin’s vibrant musicians than late night shows and the latest hustle.

Austin Music Foundation is one of the few local non-profits that support local musicians, so they can continue to rock our musical worlds.

Although I knew of Austin Music Foundation, I was amazed to discover just how hard the organization works to help musicians become as business-savvy as they are creative. This is vital to their lasting success. Because while Austin gets the best of their creativity, musicians aren’t always equipped with the business savvy it takes to be successful in the industry over the long run. [Read more…]

16 Pro Tips for Making the Most of ACL Music Fest

October 1, 2015 by Jessica Pino Leave a Comment

Pro Tips for ACL Music Fest

On the verge of celebrating its 13th birthday, ACL Music Festival continues to outdo itself year after year. I’ve been attending the festival for the past seven years and, each time around, I’ve either gotten a little smarter, or the festival has gotten a little better. Or maybe it’s a combination of both. ACL has become a well-oiled machine, from coordinated shuttles to the quality of local eats. Even the Porta Potties don’t (completely) stink.

In seven years, I’ve realized some unofficial do’s and don’ts for the event, such as: Don’t drink too much alcohol, and do drink plenty of water. Seems obvious, right? Wrong! It probably took me two ACLs to learn that one…the hard way.

In the interest of saving you from the difficulties I experienced the hard way, here are some of my best pro tips for enjoying ACL Music Fest, no matter which weekend you attend. [Read more…]

Gary Clark Jr. Is Austin Music Legend in the Making

Gary Clark Jr. Austin City Limits Taping

Gary Clark Jr. is making Austin proud once again. In anticipation of his latest album, The Story of Sonny Boy Slim, Clark performed during an ACL taping for the show’s upcoming 41st season. I cannot quite put into words how energizing and entertaining it is to watch Gary Clark Jr. perform live. But I’ll try.

Migrant Kids Discusses Life Changing Move to Austin

Guest article by Emily Burns

For Miguel Ojeda, John Zakoor and Bryan O’Flynn, the band name Migrant Kids represents not only a group of musicians, but the embodiment of a lifestyle. I had the chance to sit down with the band and learn a bit more about their music and background.

Musical Support System

As cousins growing up together, Ojeda and Zakoor were always in the presence of music and frequently put on performances at family reunions.

They both agree much of the passion and drive upon which Migrant Kids is founded can be credited to the [Read more…]

5 Up and Coming Austin Musicians to Watch

August 4, 2015 by Jessica Pino 8 Comments

Austin Musicians to Watch

Austin has a lot of nicknames: ATX, Bat City, the Violet Crown, Liberal City of Texas, Hippie Haven. But the nickname that rings true to everyone who calls Austin home is the Live Music Capital of the World. Not Texas, not the U.S., but the entire world! It goes without saying that choosing only five up and coming Austin musicians to watch is quite difficult.

I don’t typically like using standard musical genres to describe music because musicians are often so much more dynamic than one label describes. But for the sake of this article, I try to cover a variety of genres.

And I’m not saying these five are the ONLY bands to watch. They’re simply in my top five at the moment. If I see any of them scheduled to play a show, I make it a point to go watch. And I hope you will, too.

So without further ado, here’s my list of five Austin musicians you should watch and add to your playlist immediately. [Read more…]

Kiddoo and the Dude’s Circus Funk Rock Keeps Austin Weird

Kiddoo and the Dude Show

Kiddoo and the Dude plays to a packed Spider House Ballroom

Which bands did you check out last weekend? Maybe you caught a soulful blues set at Saxon Pub. Dug a few cover bands on Dirty 6th. Rocked out to a bluegrass/hardcore mashup at Empire Garage.

Me? I saw a circus funk/rock seven piece with performance artists, a rapper dressed like a cast member from Super Troopers and at least one band member jumping on a trampoline.

If you had to read that last sentence three times, congrats. Welcome to the wonderfully bizarre world of Kiddoo and the Dude, a mad menagerie of music, art and electric good times. [Read more…]

Shakey Graves: From Suitcase Musician to Rising Star

May 19, 2015 by Edgar Barguiarena 1 Comment

Shakey Graves on Stage

Shakey Graves expresses genuine gratitude for playing on such a grand stage

With over 1,800 in attendance, Alejandro Rose-Garcia was headlining in front of his largest crowd ever. “I’m just gonna take a minute to soak all this in,” Alejandro, better known as Shakey Graves, shared with the at-capacity audience.

The hometown favorite had come full circle. Since returning to Austin in 2010, Shakey Graves had taken his one-man band from opening in shady clubs on 6th Street to his very own taping for American television’s greatest music show, Austin City Limits. [Read more…]

Motherpunker Lauren Larson of Ume: The Hand That Rocks the Cradle

Guest article by Audrey René Rodriguez

With a career that began with her 15-year old self riffing a guitar at a skatepark in a band named Twelve Blades, Lauren Langer Larson has fashioned more guitar licks on her belt than most. Whether or not she joined Twelve Blades to impress the skater boys is yet to be determined (and the one joke of this article).

Something tells me that someone who has been mother to Austin’s Girls’ Rock Camp for some time now does not tread lightly when it comes to girls in bands. [Read more…]

The Cactus Cafe is bringing one of the world’s leading jazz guitarists, Bill Frisell, and the Big Sur Quintet to the Texas Union Ballroom this Sunday, March 8th, to examine the work of one of folk music’s preeminent figures: Woody Guthrie.

Frisell’s eclectic fountain of rock, country, progressive, jazz and blues music is well known in musician circles throughout the world. But Frisell is looking forward to his Austin gig.

“The first time I came to Austin was in the early ‘90s,” he shared. “I played at the Continental Club and that became, in a way, a home base for me. I’ve played there many, many, many times.” [Read more…]
