Calliope Musicals New Album Profits Homeless Through Magic Militia

July 16, 2012 by Brittany Highland 13 Comments

Skinny's Ballroom in Downtown Austin

Calliope Musicals CD release at Skinny’s Ballroom

What was planned as an 11 o’clock show time stretched to midnight, but that didn’t suck the energy from the crowd.

Skinny’s Ballroom was crammed, as fans of Calliope Musicals gathered to celebrate the release of the Austin band’s first full-length album.

As lead singer Carrie Fussell glided through their set, I sensed a heavy influence from 60s and 70s music and even conjoured up some mental images of flower power. I wasn’t too surprised to find out that the band has compared their sound to The Mamas & the Papas, Paul Simon, Jefferson Airplane, The Rolling Stones and Janis Joplin. Singer and guitarist Matt Roth even bounced up and down a bit like the boys on the Ed Sullivan Show back in the day.  [Read more…]

July 9, 2012 by Eric Highland 24 Comments

Saints of Valory Kids Release AustinLoud drums, loud bass and chemistry.

This is the story of the Saints of Valory, never fully told or published until now.

Before you go any further, know that if you ever decide to take on chronicling a band’s history, take my advice and get all of the band members together in one room, chain them to their chairs and get all your questions answered in one sitting.

Anything short of this is likely to drive you insane. [Read more…]

Maggie Koerner and the Slow Burn Heat Up Austin

June 12, 2012 by Brittany Highland 16 Comments

Maggie Koerner performs at The Belmont in AustinEvery once in a while when a vocalist steps to the microphone, takes a breath for that first note, and lets the sound out, the audience is surprised. They’re left wondering, “Where did that sound come from?” and spend the rest of the set riding acoustic waves they never saw coming.

Maggie Koerner and the Slow Burn recently opened for Saints of Valory at The Belmont, and delivered up a surprise performance for first-time listeners. But there’s quite a story behind the formation of the group, including no small amount of serendipity. [Read more…]

Tom Gimbel of Austin City Limits: This Is What I Want to Do

April 30, 2012 by Brittany Highland 2 Comments

Tom Gimbel General Manager of Austin City LimitsThis is the story of a man who got what he wanted. Mix one part passionate, one part competitive, one part positive, and you get Tom Gimbel.

Throw in a few parts happenstance, and you get Tom’s life: An amazing journey from record company intern to General Manager of Austin City Limits. Where he ends up – nobody knows.

The Early Years: Amazing Records

Since the time Tom was a student at The University of Texas 25 years ago, he was a fan of music across the board. But playing in local bands wasn’t enough. In order to become more educated about music, he decided to intern at a local record company. He flipped open the phone book and Amazing Records was listed first. His offer to work for free was [Read more…]

Austinot Music Podcast, Ep. #4: The Hereticks

April 26, 2012 by Dustin Vegas 6 Comments

This week I am featuring a high-energy Austin band named the Hereticks on the Austinot Music Podcast. Straight out of West Campus, the Hereticks started making music in Spring of 2011. Three of the four members met while living in Pearl Street Co-op, which is somewhat of a haven for musicians and artists west of UT.

The Hereticks are: Ofer Shouval (guitar, vocals), Wesley Maffly-Kipp (bass, vocals), Will Johnson (guitar, vocals), and Peter Farago (Drums). [Read more…]

Austinot Music Podcast, Ep. #3: The Rocketboys

April 19, 2012 by Dustin Vegas 4 Comments

This Austinot Music Podcast episode is very exciting for me personally. Why? Today I have the pleasure of sharing some music from Austin musicians, the Rocketboys.

I started listening to the Rocketboys when they formed in Abilene, Texas years ago. Their powerful music, tumultuous history, and journey to settling in Austin has earned the Rocketboys a place among my favorite featured bands.

The Rocketboys were the soundtrack to my growing up. Over the years, I have watched the band develop a complex and emotional voice. With a style ranging from powerful and sweeping to fragile and melodic, the Rocketboys have spent the past seven years crafting a sound that is their own. [Read more…]

Austinot Music Podcast, Ep. #2: Da Di Da

April 12, 2012 by Dustin Vegas 2 Comments

Hearing a truly eclectic band is always a breath of fresh air for me. I spend a lot of my time sifting through bands who, though talented, find it hard to deviate from time-tested genres. So my ears perked when I heard my roommate listening to Da Di Da one day. I asked what genre they were, and the best description she could give was, “a kind of jazz-rock with a lot of storytelling.”

I walked to my room to download Da Di Da’s EP, and I soon realized just how right she was. [Read more…]

Austin Nightlife on Sixth Street

January 20, 2012 by Brittany Highland 2 Comments

6th-Street-Austin-Texas-ChristmasSixth Street always seems to be the buzz phrase when it comes to Austin nightlife. On our most recent outing, the 6th definitely lived up to the hype.

We arrived before the crowds, so we were able to find street parking on Red River, right off of 6th. A short stroll (a little bit longer, since I realized I forgot my I.D. and had to go back to the car) brought us to our destination: Pete’s Dueling Piano Bar.

I must confess that being new to the scene, Austin bars are all about the same to me right now. But Pete’s is a place I’ve been wanting to visit for a long time, and it didn’t let me down.

There’s nothing like good drinks, happy people, and singing at the top of your lungs to your favorite songs. [Read more…]
