Summer Nights the Austin Way: Sound and Cinema at the Long Center

June 19, 2013 by Edgar Barguiarena Leave a Comment

Sound and Cinema at the Long Center

Sound & Cinema at the Long Center

This guest post is by Edgar Barguiarena.

Austin has Wednesday figured out. Instead of being driven indoors during 100+ degree weather in the thick of summer, we flock towards the siren call of free, live outdoor events.

Fortunately, we’re blessed with a multitude of public parks and outdoor event centers that facilitate this addiction. KGSR has spoiled us over the last 23 years with their Blues on the Green series featuring live music at Zilker park, with the majestic Austin skyline as a backdrop, every other Wednesday over the summer. Alamo Drafthouse has us covered with Rolling Roadshow, featuring classic movies at a unique Austin locale, shown on a huge inflatable screen with top-of-the-line sound system. Even the venerable Austin Symphony has jumped in, showcasing their free “Concerts in the Park” series at the Long Center on Sunday nights over the last 11 years.

Most world-class cities would be fortunate to have even a few of these options. But Austin and Austinites don’t stop there. I mean, what are we supposed to do on the Wednesdays that Blues on the Green isn’t running? What other outdoor events are out there? [Read more…]

All Dates Begin Well at Austin’s Violet Crown Cinema

February 5, 2013 by Guest Blogger Leave a Comment

Violet Crown Cinema Lobby

This guest blog post is by Hunter Stanford.

I finally had a date. Finally. It had been so long since my last one that all that remained were hazy visions of one-sided conversations and unreturned phone calls. Almost 27, I’m not getting any younger. What if this is the last date I ever get?

I had to make it count and that’s where Violet Crown Cinema came in. A classy movie joint nestled into Austin’s downtown bustle, the Crown meets the fine standard set by all the Alamos and cinema festivals of our fine city. [Read more…]

Guest Blog: Who Is the Best Austin Filmmaker?

July 10, 2012 by Guest Blogger 9 Comments

This guest blog post is by Harrison Flatau and Josh Elmer.

Hello Austinot! Harrison and Josh here from MovieDebaters.com. We’re dedicated to providing a space for thought-provking film posts, and the wonderful folks here at The Austinot wanted to us to share some of that with you. We’ve decided to share our monthly debate on the best Austin filmmaker: Mike Judge vs. Wes Anderson.

Mike Judge Best Austin Filmmaker

Mike Judge

Harrison: Mike Judge’s small catalogue of films has absolutely struck a chord with audiences. It’s been 13 years since the release of Office Space. People are still using it as cultural shorthand for the way workplaces work. The same goes for 2006’s Idiocracy. More and more, I see people using that film to describe the direction we’re heading. No other filmmaker I can think of has beem rooted so deeply into the collective conscious of the public. [Read more…]

The Session: Austin’s Own Psychological Thriller

June 20, 2012 by Dustin Vegas 6 Comments

Austin, Texas is a great place for an indie filmmaker. We have multiple film festivals like the Austin Film Festival and South by Southwest. Enter The Session,  a film created by a group of  University of Texas students and graduates. They are a dedicated bunch of  artists who are carving their own way within the Texas film scene. They call themselves Red Herring Productions.

Currently the team is working day and night to craft a story they think can compete in the Texas film circuit.  “It’s a labor of love,” says producer Laura Herring. ” I’m doing it because I love making films. I’d say that it’s the general feeling of a good many people on this boat.” [Read more…]

Austin Film Meet Mixer

February 7, 2012 by Brittany Highland 2 Comments

Stompin-Grounds-Coffee-&-Cocktail-LoungeIn our Facebook wanderings, we came across a Facebook event for the Austin Film Meet’s February mixer. Eric posted on the event wall and received a warm response from Anthony Spears – who runs the Austin Film Meet’s social networking accounts – so we decided to give it a shot.

The Austin Film Meet holds monthly mixers for networking and it seems to be a very friendly and supportive community for visual media folks in ATX. [Read more…]
