In our Facebook wanderings, we came across a Facebook event for the Austin Film Meet’s February mixer. Eric posted on the event wall and received a warm response from Anthony Spears – who runs the Austin Film Meet’s social networking accounts – so we decided to give it a shot.
The Austin Film Meet holds monthly mixers for networking and it seems to be a very friendly and supportive community for visual media folks in ATX.
H.Cherdon, founder of Austin Film Meet
Last night’s group was made up of producers, directors, writers, actors, editors, composers, makeup artists, directors of photography – the whole shebang. Many people had recently moved to Austin and were trying to get plugged in locally.
Networking at Stompin Grounds
The whole experience spectrum was represented: From a producer/director who worked in L.A., to an actor who just got an agent and is transitioning to full-time, to college students who are trying to break into the industry any way they can.

The event was held in SoSoCo (I just made that up. It’s fun to say.) at Stompin Grounds Coffee & Cocktail Lounge. The venue was small for the amount of people who ended up showing up, but it was definitely helpful to have a private room and a stage with a mic to use.
the Austinot with Andrew Lee, whose documentary was the #1 streamed video on Netflix for 3 days last week
After mingling time, there was an open mic session. Each person had 90 seconds to introduce themselves, current projects and/or recent milestones.
Four sisters who all have different talents and roles in the film scene
More than 45 people ended up speaking, and not everyone who attended went on stage. I actually found each presentation to be interesting because each person is on a different leg of their journey through the film world, with different accomplishments and goals for the future.

We’re excited about continuing to get plugged into the film community in Austin. We’ve been invited to visit a local studio for a tour, and hope to also get onto some live sets to publicize exciting and unique film projects taking place in Austin.
It was a packed house last night and we look forward to move Austin Film Meet events
This seems really cool. Do you know when the March mixer is?
