Top 5 Selfie Spots in Austin

August 28, 2015 by Mathis Kennington 6 Comments

Selfies have taken the place of scrapbooks. Now we have a million outlets we can use to let everyone know what we’re doing at every moment of our totally awesome vacations and stay-cations. Selfies are the official modern day method of letting everyone know where you’ve been and how good you looked doing it. Austin is no exception. Here are five of the best spots to get your selfie on in Austin.

#1 Pennybacker Bridge Selfie

Looking good at Pennybacker Bridge

I’d like to introduce you to Perry Hoskin. He’s the ripped gentleman on the left. He politely accepted my invitation to take a selfie here, just north of the Pennybacker Bridge, more commonly known as the 360 Bridge. Perry didn’t look like this before he hiked up the gravely path. He used to fit in that shirt. [Read more…]

Gully Cat Tattoo: Inking Austin Since 2003

Austin is the nation’s hub for individual expression and creativity. We don’t erase graffiti; we make landmarks and t-shirts out of it. We listen to passionate local music. We eat food with personality. We drink beer with soul.

We love creative expression so much, we even wear it on our skin. Live here long enough, and you’ll forget until you go out of town that Austin tattoos are as common as Austin breakfast tacos.

Gully Cat Tattoo has accommodated Austin’s lust for creative expression for 14 years and Mike Terrell–shop owner and Austin native–has been a tattoo artist for nearly two decades. His little shop is just what you’d hope to find on South 1st: a colorful old home turned into a business. This local business adds to the funky vibe that makes South Austin what it is. [Read more…]

Best Beer Flights in Austin

I swear by the beers I love. For this reason, it’s difficult for me to stretch beyond my usual suspects to sample all the exploding craft beer market has to offer. This article was an exercise in getting outside my comfort zone.

For the last two months, I, along with my courageous tasting team, dove gullet deep in Austin’s bombastic brew culture. We ventured into the cruel and recently very wet traffic to satisfy our insatiable desire to find the best beer flights in Austin.

Why beer flights? Beer flights are about relationships. They force you to consider not just what’s within the glass, but what’s between them.

We let our bartenders dazzle us with their selections, giving each one [Read more…]

Independence Fine Foods Is Far South Austin’s Latest American Diner

April 8, 2015 by Mathis Kennington 2 Comments

Independence Fine Foods Austin

Independence Fine Foods at 1807 W Slaughter facing Manchaca Rd

Editor’s Note: Independence Fine Foods shut its doors in January 2019.

A unique blend of old world Austin and new world organic welcomes patrons of Independence Fine Foods. The recently burgeoning entertainment district in far south Austin has urban sprawlers from all over the city trekking south of the river to discover the next great bar or cup of coffee. Located across from Moontower Saloon in an unassuming storefront off Manchaca Road, Independence Fine Foods is nestled in the heart of an emerging destination for local libations and chow.

The first time I saw Independence, I thought it was an international food store. It wasn’t until I ran past the restaurant that I sniffed hints of coffee and…is that roast beef?

Naturally, I needed to investigate. What greeted me inside the heavy hardwood entrance was an American diner that bridged the patience of slowly brewed coffee with ready-made organic meals. [Read more…]
